Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Dragon tamers are masters of making the world's mightiest creatures fight alongside them. They can do so with compassion or with power, but no matter what their bond is strong with one another. A Dragon Tamer and their dragon know each other's weaknesses and try to accommodate one another. Their sleep schedules tend to sync up over time, as do their eating habits.

Dragon Tamer Magic

Starting at 3rd level, you learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Dragon Tamer Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.

Dragon Tamer Spells

RANGER LEVEL SPELL
3rd command

Draconic Ally

At 3rd level, you gain a dragon companion that accompanies you on your adventures and is trained to fight alongside you.

When you choose this feature, choose the color of your dragon. It gains a damage resistance based on its color.

Dragon Color

Damage Type

Black Acid
Blue Lightning
Brass Fire
Bronze Lightning
Copper Acid
Gold Fire
Green Poison
Red Fire
Silver Cold
White Cold

Its hit point maximum equals 5 times your class level + it's own Constitution modifier. Like any creature, it can spend Hit Dice during a short rest to regain hit points.

The dragon obeys your commands as best as it can. It takes its turn on your initiative. On your turn, you can verbally command the dragon as a bonus action. You can verbally command it to take the Attack, Dash, Disengage, or Help action. When you command it to take an action, you can also direct it to move before or after taking it. If you don't issue a command, the dragon takes the Dodge action.

If you are incapacitated or absent, the dragon acts on its own, focusing on protecting you and itself.

If the dragon dies, you can revive it by using 50gp for the necessary materials and spending a first level spell slot. This revival process takes one hour to complete.

Unlocked Potential

Your Dragon Companion begins to trust you further and you study it further, learning about abilities previously unaware to you. Pick two of the Draconic Evolutions when you reach level 7. You gain a third one at level 11 and a fourth one at level 15.

Amphibious

Your Dragon Companion can breathe air and water.

Dragon's Breath

Your Dragon Companion gains the ability to shoot a damaging breath as an action. Your Dragon Companion's color determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When your Dragon Companion uses it's Breath Attack, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by its color. The DC for this saving throw equals 11 + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 3d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. After your companion uses its breath attack, it can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Color Damage Type Breath Weapon
Black Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Blue Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)

Improved Dragon's Breath

Your Dragon Companion's Breath attack can now be used three times before a short or long rest. Your Dragon Companion must have the "Dragon's Breath" Unlocked Potential feature to access this feature.

Improved Powerful Build

Your Dragon Companion's carrying capacity and the weight it can push, drag, or lift are now doubled. Your Dragon Companion must have the "Powerful Build" Unlocked Potential feature to have access to this feature.

Improved Tightened Scales

Your Dragon Companion gains an additional +1 to their AC. Your Dragon Companion must have the "Tightened Scales" Unlocked Potential feature to access this feature.

Increased Speed

Your Dragon Companion's flying and walking speed both increase by 10.

Powerful Build

Your Dragon Companion is considered Large for the purposes of determining it's carrying capacity and the weight it can push, drag, or lift. This allows a medium creature to ride it.

Spell Transfer

Any spells with a range of Self can now be used on your Dragon Companion instead.

Subtle Communication

Your Dragon Companion understands your intentions based on simple eye movements and hand gestures. When you use your bonus action to command it, you no longer need to do so verbally. If you attempt to command your creature secretly, it has no issue understanding you if it can see you.

Tightened Scales

Your Dragon Companion gains +1 AC.

Advanced Training

As you spend time with your Dragon, it learns more about survival and combat. At 11th level, your Dragon Companion's Intelligence increases to 8 and it's Wisdom and Charisma both become 12.

Dragon Kin

Starting at 11th level, you find your relationship with your Dragon has grown to the point where you begin learning from them. You gain a resistance to the same damage your Dragon Companion has from it's color.

Martial Essence

Beginning at 15th level, you begin to use your Dragon's natural traits to enhance your weapons. Whenever you finish a long rest, you can spend 10 minutes upgrading one weapon of your choice. You may only have one weapon at a time with this feature. Applying it to a second weapon removes the feature from the first. When you make an attack with a weapon with this feature, you gain an additional 2d8 damage of the same type your Dragon was naturally resistant to. This damage is considered magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
