Base Class: Ranger
Phoenix Wardens are rangers who use their magical connection with nature to form an enduring bond with a phoenix. This bond allows the ranger to summon the phoenix to their side and to share in it's power.
Phoenix Companion
The phoenix is friendly to you and your companions and obeys your commands. See its game statistics in the Phoenix Companion stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places.
In combat, the phoenix shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the phoenix can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.
If the phoenix dies it returns to an egg form. You can use a spell slot during a short rest to quicken the egg and return the phoenix to life in it's previous form and power. If the egg hatches naturally you must wait for the phoenix to grow large enough to engage in combat again.
Bond of Flame
The bond you share with your phoenix intensifies, protecting you and stoking the phoenix’s fury.
While your phoenix is summoned, you and the drake gain the following benefits:
• You gain resistance to the fire damage.
• The phoenix does not take attacks of opportunity while flying.
• The phoenix's bite attack deals an extra 1d6 fire damage.
Flame of the Phoenix
As an action, you can extend a 30-foot cone of damaging flames or cause your phoenix to do so. Each creature in the cone must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC, taking 6d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. This damage increases to 8d6 when you reach 15th level in this class. Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a spell slot of 3rd level or higher to use it again.
Perfected Bond
Your bond to your phoenix reaches the pinnacle of its power. While your phoenix is nearby, you and the phoenix gain the following benefits:
• The phoenix's talon attack deals an extra 1d6 fire damage (for a total of 2d6 extra damage).
• When either you or the phoenix takes damage while you’re within 30 feet of each other, you can use your reaction to give yourself or the phoenix resistance to that instance of damage.
• If you die while the phoenix is within 30 feet of you, it sacrifices it's flames to return you to life with a number of hit point equal to the phoenix's current hit points and reverts to it's egg form.
