Base Class: Wizard
School of Mana is an arcane tradition based on the understanding of the true nature of magic and it‘s fundamentals. This level of devotion to magic itself leads to a broader application of its workings.
Some practitioners of the school of mana are sages who study magic in order to further the magical understanding of all. Others may become deadly magical duelists and Battlemages by using their opponent’s magic against themselves.
Mage Sight
Your understanding of magic and its working allows you to see magical energies constantly. You can cast detect magic at will.
This constant exposure to magic guides you in your arcane studies. You become proficient with the Arcana skill. In case you are already proficient with the Arcana skill your proficiency bonus is doubled.
Arcane Intrusion
Most spellcaster learn to cast spells without seeing the flow of magic. That missing understanding leaves the spells unprotected. You can use this weakness to alter the spells of others. When a creature casts a spell within 30 feet of you, you can use your reaction to modify the spell:
- You can increase or decrease its potency to upcast it as if the creature who cast the spell had used a spell slot higher or lower (works only if the spell can be upcast and/or downcast)
- You can increase or decrease the spell save DC by your intelligence modifier (works only for spells which requires a saving throw)
- You can redirect the spell to a different target (works only with single target spells)
You can do so three times per day and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Spell Archive
As you are constantly surrounded by magic, you find it easier to understand and create new spells. You learn one additional Wizard spell each time you gain a level.
Your experience with the alteration of spells also decreases the mental stress caused by remembering spell diagrams and formulas, which helps in preparing your spells. You can prepare additional spells based on half of your proficiency bonus rounded down.
Arcane Studies
They say that to reach the height of its art you must teach others. As your understanding of magic is reaching new heights, you start to educate your party members in the art of magic. Each party member (including you) learn one cantrip and one spell of 1st level from the wizard list. Using this feature, they can cast the spell once without expending a spell slot at their lowest level. After that, the spell can be cast normally with spell slots if available.
The spellcasting ability is Intelligence for the spells.
Nexus of Magic
While seeing Magic in its true beauty you understood the basic truth that all magic be it arcane, holy, infernal or primordial has the same root. With this understanding, you can learn spells that were before beyond your understanding. When you find a scroll of a non-wizard spell, you can now copy it into your spell book as if it were a Wizard spell for you.
Additionally when reach a new level in your Wizard class and you learn new spells, one of the new spells can be selected from any class. They count as wizard spells for you, but not for other Wizards.

Posted Dec 16, 2020Changes from first version. 2nd level ability changed from proficency times a day to 3 times a day. That would probably be to strong for redirect. If i exclude redirect proficency times a day would probably be fine, but then the feature is to boring for my taste.
Changes from second version. While building an example Wizard i saw the combiantion of Spell Archive and Nexus of Magic is a bit to strong at level 10. You would get 10 magical secrets compared to the lore bards 6. Also the Theurgy wizard needed level 17 to learn non domain spells. So I had to shift it to level 14 to make it more comparable. The problem is now that you will likely not reach the feature what is sad, but probably unavoidable. Arance studies at level 10 should be fine. It is like a weaker magical iniate for all party member which they could choose on level 12 anyway (expecting people to use level 4 and 8 to increase their main stat), but now get for free.
Maritals will like the shield or absorb element and everybody can use find familiar. :) Cantrips is probably limited to mend and mage hand as most will have a bad intelligence score, but what shenanigans i have seen with shape water that is probably fine.

Posted Dec 16, 2020Inspiration for the build is Roderick from Thurgau of the Askir Series wich at the end is so acomplished at spellcasting that he hacks the spells his enemies are casting. He describes it as if the spellwork has loose ends which you just need to pull and the spell vanishes if i remember correctly and Daniel Black from the Daniel Black series. Minor Spoiler below:
He gets the opportunity to learn 4 fields of magic and chooses beyond others Mana and thus has a far better understanding than all other casters in the world eventhough he is new to magic and all other use magic since childhood. He uses the law of einstein (e=mc^2) to change matter into magic which grants him almost unlimited mana. Which of course i could not include. One idea would be you get proficency times more arcane recovery, but i have the feeling the sub class is already a bit on the too strong side.
