Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Long ago, a young noble of a large wandering earthmote called the Cloudland staged a daring coup- hiring a notorious assassin to take out the High King and Queen of the Cloudland in broad daylight. He succeeded, and maneuvered his way into becoming king of the Cloudland and its people, a race called wingles. But, crucially, his victory was not total: the princess, sole child and heir, escaped over the edge of the earthmote, still very much alive and in possession of the mighty spear Valknyr, the symbol of the royal house.

Secretly, at first, Gildas- the new king- began sending out rangers to the ground below to try to track down the lost princess, and finish her off. They traveled far and wide, well beyond the vicinity of the Cloudland, Gildas driving them into whatever harsh and unforgiving terrain pricked his paranoia. Each and every single one of their missions was unsuccessful: the princess was only found once, and on that occasion she bested the team of rangers in battle and vanished into the wilds overnight.

After this, word began to spread of Gildas' obsession. He pivoted and publicly fronted his rangers as searching not for the princess, but for a legendary lost sword of the wingles, a quest that already had much grassroots support. Quickly and quietly the controversy faded, and Gildas' rangers- the Cloud Scouts- became a proud institution of the Cloudland. They began to take on more genuinely patriotic and helpful causes to aid in this, and were looked up to for aid when it seemed like no success was possible.

Eventually, Gildas passed, and the original purpose of the Cloud Scouts took a backseat to their more recent endeavors. What had been careless and haphazard missions now became a point of pride, with new Cloud Scouts undergoing intense training to be able to handle surviving in hostile conditions. They trained extensively in combat as well, becoming specialists in an array of styles. Over time, as the isolation of the Cloudland culture lessened, the Cloud Scouts were opened up to other races, and some even formed permanent stations far the the wilderness of distant lands.

Wingle or otherwise, today a Cloud Scout is one who will go anywhere and make any sacrifice to confront danger head on.

Combat Specialist

The Cloud Scouts train heavily for combat and taking on armed opponents, in preparation for reclaiming the lost sword of legend. You focus on your specific fighting style, increasing your mastery.

Defensive Resilience

Your tenacity is enhanced by your armor, and you've learned to take advantage of your protection to find moments to fight off setbacks and avoid danger.

Duelist's Poise

Your dedication to dueling lhas developed into an uncanny ability to read your opponents movements and find the best position for you to strike from. When wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, once on your turn when you hit a creature with a melee attack you can take the Disengage action and move up to proficiency+Dexterity modifier feet as part of the attack.

Hail of Blades

Your specialization in wielding twin weapons has given you the know-how to feint and distract at lightning speed, setting your foe up for even more dangerous attacks. You have a +1 bonus to damage of melee weapon attacks for each melee weapon attack you hit a single creature with during your turn; the bonus resets at the end of your turn.

Sharpshooter

Your experience with bows and other ranged weapons has taught you how to compensate for the diminishing accuracy of long range assaults and hard to pin down targets. You no longer have disadvantage when attack with a weapon's long range or while attacking a prone creature, or while attacking a creature that has partial cover or is lightly obscured.

Aerial Agility

Cloud Scouts are trained to sense air currents and move along with them, being literally dumped into harsh and rugged landscapes- though it takes long to master, some of their most fundamental training is working with primal spirits of the air to glide through it on their way down. This had its roots in the scouts diving off the edge of the Cloudland- a large earthmote at a considerable elevation- to set off on their missions. When you fall and are not incapacitated, you can subtract up to Ranger level x5 feet from your fall when calculating your fall damage, and can move horizontally DEX mod. feet for every 2 feet you fall. You’re also acclimated to high altitude, including elevations above 20,000 feet.

Sense Weak Spot

Your senses and instincts as a Cloud Scout have become so sharp you can sense a weak spot on a foe no matter how small. You can make a Perception check when making a weapon attack, and deal check result as bonus damage. Must take a long or short rest before using again.

Shocking Reversal

The primeval awareness common to rangers is continually practiced and drilled by Cloud Scouts, until it becomes a subconscious reflex. Your sharpened instincts and connection to the land and its spirit let you react in the briefest of moments, spring into action or directing others. When not incapacitated or Surprised, after rolling initiative can switch initiative with a creature within 90 feet. Must take a long or short rest before using again.
