Base Class: Barbarian
A Barbarian who has chosen the Path of the Dunestalker will have a place in the Social sphere in a way Barbarians may not normally find their way. Dunestalkers are at their best when using two weapons and given space to maneuver. Their Rage will often be presented more as a tranquil combat trance, where they fight through muscle memory and instincts, rather than anger, though mechanically it is the same. Dunestalkers are a core part of their nomad caravan, and even young Dunestalkers will be given responsibilities for the caravan that go beyond defense. Some Dunestalkers have excelled at divining where to find water, others have been known to be wise arbiters of disputes, while others are simply repositories of the caravan's knowledge that can be shared through words or complex dances that tell the history of the caravan. A Dunestalker is always welcome to any group or purpose, as they are known to be loyal, stalwart, and excellent with their paired weapons.
Play a Dunestalker if...
- You want to be a wise and powerful Barbarian that acts with tranquil fury on the battlefield.
- You want to be a Barbarian that uses two weapons and creates zones of control in combat.
- You imagine your Barbarian as a person with a place in their society and not an outcast.
- You want to make complex movements on the battlefield to confuse and deceive your enemies.
Building a Dunestalker: Like all Barbarians, focus on Strength and Constitution first. Do not neglect your Dexterity, and if you have the ability to, make sure to have a positive Wisdom modifier.
Dunestalker Fighting Style
Two-Weapon Fighting
When you engage in two-weapon fighting, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the second attack.
Dunepattern
When you enter a Rage, you gain the following abilities:
- Your Move Speed is further increased by 10.
- When you move, you create a Dunepattern. Each square you move through is part of your Dunepattern. On another creature's turn, if it moves on a square that is part of your Dunepattern, you may use your Reaction to move to that creature and take an Attack. Your Dunepattern fades at the start of your turn.
- When you are in your own Dunepattern, you have Advantage on all Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, and Wisdom Saving Throws.
Dunestalker Pattern Walking
Starting at 6th Level, when you are within your Dunepattern,
- You are considered to have Half Cover from ranged attacks and effects that would cause you to make a Saving Throw.
- Creatures that attack you in melee must make a Constitution Saving Throw DC: 8 + your CON mod + Proficiency or be Blinded.
- When attacking from within your Dunepattern, you may make a contested Survival (Wisdom) against your target's Insight (Wisdom). If you succeed, your Attacks for this turn against that target have Advantage. You may only use this against one target per turn.
Dunestalker's Freedom
Starting at 10th Level, while you are within your Dunepattern, you have the effect of Freedom of Movement. In addition, hostile creatures treat your Dunepattern as Difficult Terrain.
Master Pattern Maker
Starting at 14th Level, you have mastered the Dunepattern enough that some of the benefits are available even when not Raging. You permanently gain these bonuses:
- Your Move Speed is further increased by 10.
- When you move, you create a Dunepattern. Each square you move through is part of your Dunepattern. On another creature's turn, if it moves on a square that is part of your Dunepattern, you may use your Reaction to move to that creature and take an Attack. Your Dunepattern fades at the start of your turn.
- When you are in your own Dunepattern, you have Advantage on all Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, and Wisdom Saving Throws.
While Raging, you gain the following:
- You can sense all creatures within your Dunepattern and may make attacks on invisible or otherwise hidden creatures without any penalties.
- When you use two-weapon fighting within your Dunepattern, if you hit your target, you deal an additional 2d8 Force damage as the sand of the Dunepattern smashes into the target.
- If you are using two-weapons within your Dunepattern, you may have Three-Quarters Cover instead of Half Cover.
