Base Class: Artificer
A Jewelcaster artificer uses his magical ability to infuse gemstones with spells, granting a non-magic user the ability to cast a spell from the jewel. They pride themselves on their master work with both jewels and magic, seeing it as an artform of high caliber.
Tool Proficiency
You gain proficiency with Jeweler's Tools. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan’s tools of your choice.
Jewelcaster Spells
You always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Jewelcaster Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.
Jewelcaster Spells
| Artificer Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 3rd | Color Spray, Distort Value |
| 5th | Locate Object, Wristpocket |
| 9th | Galder's Tower, Meld Into Stone |
| 13th | Gravity Sinkhole, Secret Chest |
| 17th | Awaken, Conjure Volley |
Gemsnare
You have learned not only the ability to make things magical, but to snare your magic in gemstones. You must have a gemstone in hand, and using your jeweler's tools spend 10 minutes placing a known spell into the stone. It does not need to be one you have prepared for the day. The spell placed inside must be of the appropriate school of magic for the gemstone. If you attempt to place a spell of a different school in a gemstone, it will shatter the jewel, and cast the spell centered on that spot. When you place the spell, choose a level for which you are able to cast it and expend a spell slot to place that spell in the stone. Any creature who has the stone may spend an action to cast the spell inside. The spell uses your Intelligence as its casting ability, and your Spell Save DC if there it requires the target to make a check. When you gain this feature, gain one gemstone listed below. You can either roll a d8 or choose.
| School of Magic | Gemstone | d8 |
|---|---|---|
| Abjuration | Tourmaline | 1 |
| Conjuration | Coral | 2 |
| Divination | Chrysoberyl | 3 |
| Enchantment | Pearl | 4 |
| Evocation | Spinel | 5 |
| Illusion | Amethyst | 6 |
| Necromancy | Jade | 7 |
| Transmutation | Garnet | 8 |
Guild Known
Your search for gems to use has brought your face and name known to many of the gemstone sellers in the city. You are able to broker good deals on acquiring and selling a gemstone. If you choose to sell a gemstone that has a spell encased in it, its rarity is treated as one level higher.
Jewelry Master
Your ability to set the gems increases. You may spend an hour building a finely wrought bracelet or necklace (your choice) that can house up to 6 gemstones. Only you can wield its power. When you use an action to cast a damage dealing spell (whether by expending a spell slot or by releasing a spell inside a gem), a spell trapped in a gem housed in the bracelet will cast automatically at the same time, if is is also a damage dealing spell that shares the same damage type. This, in effect, allows you to cast 2 spells a turn, whereas you are normally not able to. You can only do this once per short rest.
Knowing the propensity for thieves, and the lure of lucre the jewelry will attract, you have placed a magic ward on the item that causes a -5 penalty made to any slight of hand check made to take the jewelry.
Jewel Setter
Provided you have 10 minutes, you can mount the gem onto a weapon or armor. Doing so grants the wearer an ability.
If it is a weapon, after a successful hit, the wielder of the weapon may choose to cast the spell inside of the gem instead of their normal damage. This only works if an attack action is used to hit. If it is an attack of opportunity, the wielder cannot cast the spell. If it is armor, when they are successfully hit, as long as it is not a critical, the wearer of the armor may use their reaction to cast the spell inside of the gem.
In addition, your ability to place a magical trigger for casting the spell in the stone improves. At level 9 and after, when a creature you can see attempts to use the stone to cast a spell, if you are unwilling of that happening, they must make a intelligence saving throw with your Spell Save DC in order to be able to cast it.
Spell Extraction
Your many workings in gems has taught you much. You have learned not only to be able to ensnare a spell inside a gem, but to extract that spell safely, without it going off.
As a bonus action on your turn, if you have a spell infused gemstone in hand, you may release the spell without it going off, and retrieve a spell slot of the level of the spell inside.
In addition, if you have 30 minutes, quill and parchment, you may transfer the spell housed in the gem onto paper, creating a spell scroll.
