Oath of the Tempest

The Oath of the Tempest is a vow to respect the power of the storm and channel it's chaos. Those who were found by the storm usually accept it's calling when encountering a life changing moment connecting to the storm. Whether it be a thunderstorm, blizzard, sandstorm, or tornado, the tempest comes in many shapes and sizes. Paladins who wish to lead a life of channeled power and chaos often take this oath.

A paladin must be level 3 to take the Oath of the Tempest and must have had a life changing moment with the power of the storm.

Tenets of the Tempest

The tenets of the tempest are as chaotic and as bold as the storm. Paladins who swear on this oath are not bound by law and goodness as most other paladins are. They forge their own path through life and often find themselves in strange circumstances. They can become cool and collected after going through immense amounts of emotions.

Courage: The storm strengthens you and shapes your resolve. Do not fear those who have never tasted the storm.

Turmoil: The definition of tempest is the embodiment of chaos and turmoil. You are not wrong for being an element of chaos. Everyone around you is wrong for not keeping up.

Resolve: The strong winds and crushing waves of the storm can knock down even the strongest of minds. Be strong enough to look into the eye of the storm and see the colors of your own soul.

Forgiveness: The storm is not eternal. It will come and it will go, as does rage and emotion. You must clear your mind in times of judgement, as do the skies when the storm has ceased.

Divine Smite

When you take the Oath of the Tempest your Divine Smite ability deals lightning damage instead of radiant damage.

Oath Spells

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed in the Oath of the Tempest Spells table. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how oath spells work.

Oath of the Tempest Spells

Paladin Level Spells
3rd armor of Agathys, thunderwave
5th warding wind, levitate
9th call lightning, thunder step
13th control water, storm sphere
17th wall of force, maelstrom

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how Channel Divinity works.

Electrostatic Surge. You can use your channel divinity to bolster your smites to their greatest power, imbuing your weapon with the full force of the storm. When you roll damage with a divine smite, you can deliver max damage instead. This must be done before rolling damage.

Deafening Blast. You can use your channel divinity as an action to clap your hands with the power of rolling thunder. When you use this ability, each creature of your choice within 30 feet of you must make a constitution saving throw. On a failed save, they are deafened and blinded for up to 1 minute. A deafened and blinded creature can repeat the save at the end of each of their turns. On a success, the effect ends.

Aura of Static

Starting at 7th level, you gain an aura of charged static electricity around you. Hostile creatures that start their turn within 10 feet of you take lightning damage equal to your charisma modifier (minimum of 1).

At 18th level, the range increases to 30 feet.

Lightning Reflexes

Starting at 15th level, your connection to the tempest life has bolstered your reflexes. As a reaction when you are hit with a melee attack, you can move up to half your speed without provoking opportunity attack.

Arc Soul

At level 20, you become the pure embodiment of storm. As an action, you can surge the power of the tempest through you, giving you the following effects for 1 minute:

  • You gain a flying speed equal to your movement speed. The storms guide you and lift your feet where you step.
  • When you deal lightning or thunder damage, you can use your reaction to roll maximum damage on a number of dice equal to your charisma modifier.
  • You are immune to thunder and lightning damage.

Once this ability is activated, you must spend a long rest until you can activate it again.
