Wizard
Base Class: Wizard

The organisation of Daggerspell Guardians were a group of likeminded individuals who had a unique fighting style of combining different facets of magic with dual wielded daggers. Over time their secrets started to become more well known and those outside of the organisation started to learn their ways. Thus the School of Blade Magic was born.

Practitioners of Blade Magic learn how to combine their arcane abilities with martial prowess. No longer limited to just daggers, they can use any weapon to focus their spells and are extremely versatile and varied. From hurling magical volleys from afar to dealing wounding strikes up close. They have learned to intertwine their magical abilities seamlessly with their weapon attacks and use their spells to gain the advantage in any situation.

Blade Casting

You have learnt to weave spells with your weapons. When you choose this arcane tradition at level 2 you gain the following benefits:

  • You can perform the somatic components of spells even when you have melee weapons, with which you are proficient, in both hands.
  • Whenever you you cast a wizard cantrip with a casting time of 1 action that targets only a single creature and has a range other than self, you may make an attack against that target with a melee weapon you are proficient with and wielding as part of the casting and instead of any spell attack roll normally required. If the weapon attack misses, the spell fails. When you do this then you must select one of the following options:
    1. If the cantrip has a secondary effect then this is applied to the target and any saving throw required is automatically failed. Any damage caused by the cantrip is reduced to 0.
    2. If the cantrip deals damage the amount of damage applied is determined by the table below instead of its normal damage die. The damage type is the same as the original cantrip and any additional effects are not applied.

  • If you make a weapon attack as part of casting a spell on your turn using your action, this counts as taking the Attack action for the purposes of two-weapon fighting.

Arcane Bond

You learn an arcane ritual that creates a magical bond between yourself and up to two melee weapons with which you are proficient. You perform the ritual over the course of 1 hour, which can be done during a short rest. The weapon or weapons must be within your reach throughout the ritual, at the conclusion of which you touch the weapon or weapons and forge the bond. You gain the following benefits when wielding your bonded weapons:

  • Your bonded weapons count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to non-magical attacks and damage.
  • You may use your bonded weapons as arcane foci for casting your wizard spells.
  • If a bonded weapon leaves your hand as part of making an attack, you may have it reappear in your hand immediately after (no action required).

Improved Blade Casting

At level 6 your ability to channel your magic through your weapons has improved. Whenever you cast a wizard spell of 1st level or higher with a casting time of 1 action that targets only a single creature and has a range other than self, you may make an attack against that target with your bonded weapon as part of the casting and instead of any spell attack roll normally required. If the weapon attack misses, the spell fails. If you score a critical hit with the attack, you roll additional damage for the weapon and the spell even if the spell would not normally be able to critically hit. Damage from the spell and melee weapon attack are applied simultaneously for the purposes of affecting creatures that are already damaged. If the spell being cast would normally be affected by taking damage from you, the melee weapon damage dealt by you as part of casting the spell does not trigger this.

Superior Blade Casting

At level 10, you have learnt to use the pain caused by your bonded weapon to your advantage. When you deliver a spell of 1st level or higher through a bonded weapon, as part of your Improved Blade Casting ability, the target has disadvantage on the first saving throw they make against the effects of the spell.

In addition, if you hit with an attack made with your bonded weapon immediately after missing an attack made with a different bonded as part of casting a wizard cantrip on the same turn, you may apply the effects of the cantrip to the target as if you had hit.

Blade Casting Mastery

At level 14 you have mastered the ability to channel magic through your bonded weapons. If you hit with an attack made with your bonded weapon immediately after missing an attack made with a different bonded weapon as part of casting any wizard spell on the same turn, you may apply the effects of the spell to the target as if you had hit.

You also gain additional option when delivering a wizard cantrip as part of an attack made with a bonded weapon:

  • If the cantrip deals both damage and an effect you can apply both you half the number of damage dice you roll, as listed under the Blade Magic ability. Any saving throw required for the effect is automatically failed.
