Rogue
Base Class: Rogue

The Trap Maker hails from a background seeped in technology. In the furthest reaches of civilisation, there are those who innovate to survive, and thus black powder was born.

The Trap Maker may have learned how to use black powder to create explosive through the teachings of one of the creators of the technique, they may have developed their own techniques if the product has been around for long enough in this setting, or they may have been a simple worker in a production line that caught on too much.

This subclass relies heavily on the ability of Rogues to remain hidden and subtle in their work, combined with their ability to get away quickly once things start exploding.

Explosive Nature

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain the knowledge of how to craft and deploy explosives to damage your enemies. You learn to make three varieties of trap and can deploy up to a number of traps equal to your Intelligence modifier, after which you must finish a short or long rest before you can deploy another trap. When placing a trap, you must make a Sleight of Hand (Dexterity) check contested by the passive perceptions of other creatures within line of sight. The DC for the saving throw equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier.

Hidden Mine: You can deploy this trap as an action. When a creature enters the square of the trap, the trap explodes. The creature must make a dexterity saving throw, taking fire damage equal to your Sneak Attack damage on a failed save or half as much on a successful save. On a failed save, the creature is also pushed 5ft in a random direction. Roll a d8 to determine the direction, starting in the top left square from the mine and moving clockwise.

Remote Bomb: You can deploy this trap as an action. At any time after the trap has been deployed, you can use your reaction to cause it to explode. Each creature within 5 feet of the mine when it explodes must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take fire damage equal to 5 + your rogue level or half as much on a successful save. If you place this trap upon a hostile or otherwise suspicious creature, you must make a Slight of Hand (Dexterity) check contested by a Perception (Wisdom) check, not their passive perception.

Scatter Mine: You can deploy these mines as an action. You deploy three mines in or within 1 square of each other. As soon as a creature enters this space, the mines explode. These mines do fire damage equal to your proficiency bonus.

Eye for Danger

At 9th level, you gain an innate sense for possible dangers like those you create. You can cast the spell Find Traps once per short or long rest.

Innovator of Design

Starting at level 13, once per long rest, you can use your extensive knowledge of black powder to change the way your traps behave. You are able to craft either a single remote mine or hidden mine which does not count against the number of traps you can deploy. This trap has the following properties.

Alternative Damage
You can alter the structure of your trap to include changes in its reaction. You can choose one of the following damage types for your mine: Piercing, Fire, Cold, Acid, Poison, Thunder or Lightning.

Additional Effect
Your traps can also provide one of the following effects:

  • Barbed wires wrap around the initial target if they fail their saving throw, grappling and restraining them. They can use an action on their turn to break free of these bonds by making an escape check contested by your saving throw.
  • The force of your trap is such that the initial target  is knocked prone if they failed their saving throw.
  • You can designate up for four creatures that cannot set off or be injured by this trap.

Demolition Expert

At 17th level, you have learned to perfect the art of trap making. Creatures now trigger your hidden mines by moving into a square adjacent to your mine. The radius of your remote bombs increases to 15ft. You can now deploy up to five scatter bombs at once.
