Warlock
Base Class: Warlock

Your patron helps you find strength and comfort in pain and bids you to bless others with such joyous suffering. You are pushed to endure pain that would make others collapse. Your patron may be a corrupted god of healing, an eldritch being of torment, a primal spirit of strife, or something else all together.

Your patron is indifferent to torture and self-flagellation. Rather, they are more interested in the pain and hardship caused by clinging to life in extreme conditions or in a battle for survival with other creatures. As such, they are generally uninterested in the undead and non-living constructs, as those sorts of creatures are not truly alive.

Examples of patrons include Mother of Mercy, The Thorn King, Hense, and Stone's Unyielding Defiance.

Reminder:
  • Temporary hit points do not stack. If you have temp HP and would gain temp HP, you must choose to keep your current temp HP value or gain only the new  temp HP value.

Expanded Spell List

The Sufferer lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.

Bonus Cantrip

At 1st level, you learn the Minor Irritation Cantrip. It does not count against your number of cantrips known.

Shared Pain

At 1st level, your patron grants you the ability to shoulder the pain from another creature's injury.

As a reaction when a creature you can see within 30 feet of you takes damage, you may take psychic damage equal to half the damage the target creature received, up to your warlock level plus your Charisma modifier. This damage bypasses any temporary hit points you may have. Then, the target creature then gains temporary hit points equal to the psychic damage you took.

Rewarded Sacrifice

At 1st level, your patron rewards you with renewed vitality when you put yourself in harm's way and survive.

If you are at or below half of your hit point maximum (ignoring temporary hit points), you regain additional hit points equal to your warlock level plus your Charisma modifier when you heal after a short rest.

Twist the Knife

At 6th level, your attacks against healthy creatures are unnaturally painful.

Once per turn, when you hit a creature that is above half their hit point maximum with an attack, you deal an extra 1d6 psychic damage. This damage is considered magical for overcoming resistances to non-magical damage.

Life by a Thousand Cuts

At 6th level, you thrive when enduring a sufficient amount of pain.

While you are at or below half your hit point maximum (ignoring temporary hit points), you gain the following effects:

  • Your appearance is ethereally altered in a way appropriate to your patron. Your scars begin to writhe, wounds open and close, your hair transforms to thorny vines, you cry tears of blood, or some other suitably macabre aesthetic.
  • You are immune to being frightened.
  • You have advantage on Constitution saving throws that you make to maintain your concentration on a spell.
  • Psychic damage cannot reduce you below 1 hit point.
  • The extra damage for your Twist the Knife feature becomes 1d6 + your Charisma modifier
  • You gain the option to use your Shared Pain feature at will:
    • As an Action, you may touch a creature that is at or below half their hit point maximum to use your Shared Pain feature. When using Shared Pain this way, you must take the maximum damage allowed.

Blood Bond

At 10th level, you may enter into a pact with another willing creature that ties your essence to theirs. The ritual takes 1 minute to complete and each creature must take 1d4 slashing damage. The bond lasts until either creature enters into a new Blood Bond or chooses to sever the bond as an action. The bond ends early if the bonded creature is not on the same plane of existence as you.

While bonded, both you the bonded creature have a general sense of the other's health. You may target the bonded creature with your Shared Pain feature regardless of the distance to that creature. Similarly, you may target the bonded creature with any non-concentration spell that targets one creature and has a range of self or touch, as though you were targeting yourself.

Additionally, while the bonded creature is at or below half their hit point maximum, they gain resistance to psychic damage and have advantage on saving throws against being frightened.

Endless Suffering

At 14th level, your patron twists your vitality such that you never fully heal and allows you to turn excess healing into resolve. You gain the following effects:

  • Your current HP can no longer exceed half your maximum HP, so that Life by a Thousand Cuts is always active. Effects that alter your maximum HP still affect your maximum HP as normal, which in turn affects the calculation of half your maximum HP.
  • When taking a long rest, your HP is only restored up to half your maximum HP and you regain all spent hit die.
  • When you would regain HP that would cause you to exceed half your maximum HP, you may instead gain temporary HP equal to the amount you would heal.
  • You have advantage on death saving throws.
