Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

The Oath of the Silent is a binding oath to quietly and swiftly ensure balance. When balance is upset, but the voices of the many break the silence and disrupt the path to change, or when great evil brings about chaos and panic, or when a benevolent tyrant uses his voice to bear down on the voiceless, this is when the people who lurk in the dark and live previously powerless swear the Oath of the Silent. To these paladins glory and recognition do not matter, only bringing about change, no matter the cost.

TENETS OF SILENCE

The tenets of the Oath of the Silent differ between paladins, they are born out of the calamity that have brought them to this oath, but all of the tenets are similar in their dedication to three core values: balance, silence, and humility. Paladins who uphold these tenets are willing to bring about change when there is stagnation or bring about stability when there is bedlam. They do so without the need for praise or recognition. They act only for balance, at all costs let that be their lives, or their identity. There is no greater threat to balance in the eyes of the silent, than undeath which disrupts the natural balance of life and death. The core principles of the tenets are simple.

Balance at all Costs. Keep the scales of light and dark even. The natural order demands the seed of chaos. None must be allowed to break the order of life and death, nor must one be allowed to bring total chaos breaking down the natural order.

Act in Silence. Let them know not who you are, or when you are coming. Strike from darkness, without sound, leave no trace of your presence.

Never for Glory. Foolish pride leads to the fall. Greed and lust for power and glory always shifts the balance for the worst.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options.

Balance the Scales. Immediately after a creature within 30 feet of you scores a critical hit on an attack you may present your holy symbol and use your reaction to make that creature vulnerable to all damage from the next attack or damaging spell against them.

Unseen, Unheard. As an action, you may use your Channel Divinity to become invisible for up to ten minutes. For the duration of your invisibility you are completely silent and odorless. You cannot be detected by non-magical means except by creatures with tremorsense or truesight. Your silence and invisibility ends when you attack or cast a spell.

Oath Spells

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed.

Oath of the Silent Spells

PALADIN LEVEL

3rd

disguise self, expeditious retreat

5th

9th

Not a Sound

By 7th level, your divine blessings allow you to maintain constant silence. All spells you cast no longer require a verbal component. You may only be heard when you actively wish to. You cannot be eavesdropped on, and perception checks that rely on hearing automatically fail. You add a bonus to all stealth checks equal to your charisma modifier (minimum of +1).

Aura of Silence

Starting at 15th level, whenever you use your Channel Divinity: Unseen, Unheard you may cast it on all willing creatures within 10ft of you.

This range increases to 30ft at level 18.

Scale Bearer: Aura of Balance

At 20th level, you can invoke an Aura of Balance. Using your action, you cause an ethereal set of scales to appear floating behind you (the scales or its effects cannot be negated by an anti-magic field and are visible only to creatures you wish them to be visible to). For 1 hour, you gain the following benefits:

  • An Aura of Balance spreads around you, chaos and order are brought to balance. All creatures, including yourself, of a Lawful or Chaotic alignment within 10ft of you have disadvantage on attacks and saving throws and all creatures of a Neutral alignment have advantage on attacks and saving throws.
  • Additionally within your Aura of Balance, all creatures, including yourself, within 10ft of you cannot critically strike or critically fail. Whenever a creature rolls a 1 or a 20 on a d20 they must treat the roll as a 10 instead. If a creature is effected by this on an attack roll, and the attack hits after turning the roll into a 10, you may use Balance the Scales on that creature without using your reaction.
  • As a reaction you can Shift the Scales, making any creature you can see invulnerable to one damage type of your choosing for one minute but you then must also become vulnerable to that damage type for the duration.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
