Base Class: Druid
The Druids of the Circle of Scales are a select few who have found Dragons, survived the initial encounter, and been admitted into their society, learning their secrets and ways of magic. Once their initial training and study is complete, they are sent out in to the world by their dragon master to learn and expand their knowledge and power. Each druid accepted into this study is taught by an elder dragon which they can bind a piece of their soul to, allowing the druid access to power and magic far beyond natural ability.
Dragon Devotion
Druid, your journey begins...
When you choose this Circle at the 2nd level, choose a type of dragon. Your dragon-based magic abilities will be determined by this choice, and you now have resistance to all elemental damage of this type. Use the Draconic Bloodline Ancestry chart for this. You can also speak, read, and write Draconic.
Protection of the Dragon
Your master is with you...
At the 4th level, your bond to your dragon master has deepened enough that you can now take on physical traits of a dragon. Using a bonus action when you wildshape, and using two wildshape slots, your skin transforms into a layer of scales, your nails become sharp claws, and your eyes take on a gemstone-like quality. You add a +3 to your AC, your unarmed strikes become claw attacks, and you have Keen Vision, with advantage on Perception checks relating to sight. This feature can only be used once per long rest.
Voice of the Dragon
The powerful, mighty voice of the dragon is in your lungs...
Starting at the 9th level, you can take an action to let forth a mighty shout. Anyone within 15ft who hears this shout must make a Wisdom save of 15 or be stunned for the next round. This feature can be used even while not in draconic form. Additionally, if this feature is used while in draconic form, the radius extends to 25ft.
Strength of the Dragon
The strength of dragons is in your grasp...
Starting at the 9th level, you can now make a third claw attack while in your draconic form. Enemies must make a constitution save of 10, or be knocked prone. While in this form you now also have advantage on strength checks and constitution saves.
Flight of the Dragon
Spread your wings, traveler...
By now, you have created a deep connection with your dragon master, and they have bequeathed on to you their greatest gift: Flight. Once per long rest, you can use a bonus action to have a pair of large, magnificent wings sprout from your back. You gain a flight speed of 40ft and can hold yourself in the air effortlessly. You may carry one Medium size creature, or two Small size creatures, at half speed.
Soul of the Dragon
You are the master now...
You now carry the soul of an ancient dragon within you. Through study, trial, and triumph, you have mastered the power and might of dragons, and can wield it at will. You can shift into your draconic form at will, you are immune to the type of damage that matches your element, you can form your wings at will, and all unarmed strikes now deal an extra 1d8 of damage matching your element.
Well done, druid. Your master praises you, and offers you this token: one dragon scale from his crest. It provides you safety from good dragons. Travel well.

Posted Jun 16, 2020Why does this give features at 4th and 9th level? Druid subclasses get features at 6th and 10th levels.
I like the ideas in this but they need to be written more clearly and with more detailed rules. It seems to make a lot of assumptions about how things will work and not spell it out.

Posted Jan 8, 2019Well, Soul of a Dragon is most obviously at 20th level. There's no other spot for something THAT amazing.

Posted May 24, 2018I would consider a separate subclass for faerie dragon lineage. They're different enough from chroma and metallic dragons to warrant it. It should focus more on trickster and ranged abilities, where I've built this one more for melee.

Posted May 22, 2018For personal character story reasons, how would someone work the skills/abilities around their patron being a faerie dragon?
