Base Class: Fighter
Ronin are wanderers. They are swordsmen of the highest caliber, yet their blades hold a deep emptiness. Unlike their Samurai brethren, these warriors have lost their sense of identity and purpose. Their path is one of great conviction, and yet one marked with endless wavering. Whether that path be one of redemption, vengeance, enlightenment, or just plain survival, the Ronin wield their prowess in swordsmanship and philosophy to forge onward... To define for themselves their own purpose.
Bonus Proficiencies
At 3rd Level, You are proficient in Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) and Wisdom (Insight) checks if you aren't already.
Unbound Soul
At 3rd Level, You fight as if wielding the blade within your soul, sacrificing self-preservation in your pursuit of perfection and purpose. While you are unarmored and wield no shield, you gain the following benefits:
- You gain a +10 ft. bonus to your movement speed. This increases to a +20 ft. bonus at 15th Fighter Level.
- Your AC becomes 13 + your Wisdom modifier.
- You can use Wisdom, instead of Strength or Dexterity, for the attack and damage rolls of your weapon attacks.
- At the start of your turns, you can choose whether or not you will make all attack rolls that turn with advantage (no Action required). However, if you do, you must take an additional amount of damage equal to 1d6 + half your Fighter Level (rounded down) the next time you take damage from an attack or spell before the start of your next turn.
Gentle Step
At 3rd Level, Your nimble steps, swift and unseen, rival that of the wind itself. As a Bonus Action, you can move up to half your movement speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks. If you use this feature while benefitting from "Unbound Soul", you halve the next amount of damage you take from an attack or spell before the start of your next turn.
This feature can be used up to an amount of times per short or long rest equal to your Proficiency bonus.
Unleashed Strike
At 7th Level, You learn an ancient technique that allows you to strike true by unleashing your blade from its sheath with speed, immeasurable. Whenever you take the Attack Action on your turn, the first weapon attack you make for the action scores a Critical Hit on a roll of 19 or 20. Furthermore, on a hit, you can choose to forgo any number of your Extra Attacks in order to amplify it. For every Extra Attack forgone in this way, the amplifed weapon attack deals an additional amount of damage equal to 2d8 + your Proficiency bonus. If you benefit from "Unbound Soul", the damage dice become 2d10, instead of 2d8. If your attack roll is granted advantage through that feature, the damage dice become 2d12, instead of 2d10. For instance, if you are an 11th Level Fighter and you forgo 2 Extra attacks upon hitting with this first weapon attack, the attack is amplified and deals an additional 4d8 + 8 damage (2d8 + 4 per forgone attack), this increasing to 4d10 + 8 if you benefit from "Unbound Soul", and further increasing to 4d12 + 8 if you have advantage on the attack roll through that feature.
On a turn in which you use this feature, you can stow a weapon used for this amplified weapon attack at the end of the turn (no Action required).
Transcendent Convictions
At 10th Level, Your spirit melds with your mind and body as you meditate on your convictions, bolstering your instincts to levels beyond its natural limits. You gain the following benefits:
Transcendent Strike. Your instincts in battle manifest as an unyielding, two-form strike. Once on your turns, whenever you hit with a weapon attack amplified by your "Unleashed Strike" feature, you can expend one use of your "Indominable" feature to deal an additional amount of damage with the attack as if you had forgone one additional Extra Attack.
Transcendent Resilience. You can find within yourself a tenacity unnatural to you. Upon finishing a short or long rest, you can select one saving throw in which you lack proficiency. You become proficient in the selected saving throw until you finish another short or long rest.
Transcendent Wind-step. Drawing from your fighting spirit, you gain a burst of speed and energy. When you use your "Second Wind" feature, you can take the "Gentle Step" action without expending one of its uses, as part of the same action.
Soaring Elegance
At 15th Level, Your blade strikes, like the flight of a bird, are as swift and sure as they are graceful. Whenever you hit with a weapon attack amplified by your "Unleashed Strike" feature, you can further amplify the weapon attack with one of the following effects. Your weapon attack is even further amplified by the selected effect if you also benefit from the "Unbound Soul" feature:
Dancing Swallow. You strike and dart about at blinding velocities. You can move up to half your movement speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks as part of the attack. If you benefit from "Unbound Soul", you also take the Dodge Action as part of the attack. If you make a saving throw you are proficient in while dodging in this way and you make it against a damaging effect that causes you to take half damage upon a success, you are immune to the effect's damage upon succeeding against it.
Diving Falcon. You strike with the might and speed of a bird of prey. As a result, your victim is devoured in painless agony. Your weapon attack deals an additional amount of damage on a hit as if you had forgone one additional Extra Attack. If you benefit from "Unbound Soul", this extra damage is increased accordingly, as described in your "Unleashed Strike" feature. For instance, if you are a 15th Level Fighter and you forgo 2 Extra attacks upon hitting with an "Unleashed Strike", that attack deals an additional 6d8 + 15 damage (2d8 + 5 per forgone attack, 2 forgone naturally and 1 forgone through this effect), this increasing to 6d10 + 15 if you benefit from "Unbound Soul", and further increasing to 6d12 + 15 if you have advantage on the attack roll through that feature.
This feature can be used up to an amount of times per long rest equal to your Proficiency bonus.
Path of a Wanderer
At 18th Level, You have attained, by embracing both the significance and insignificance of one's own life, the power to define your own purpose. Whenever you hit with the first weapon attack within an Attack Action, the attack now scores a Critical Hit on a roll of 18 or higher, instead of just 19 or 20. If you amplify an "Unleashed Strike" attack through the "Soaring Elegance" feature, the attack deals an additional amount of damage on a hit as if you had forgone one additional Extra Attack, regardless of which option you select. If you benefit from "Unbound Soul", this extra damage is increased accordingly, as described in your "Unleashed Strike" feature. For instance, if you are a 20th Level Fighter and you forgo 3 Extra attacks upon hitting with an "Unleashed Strike" amplified by the "Diving Falcon" effect, that attack deals an additional 10d8 + 30 damage (2d8 + 6 per forgone attack, 3 forgone naturally, 1 forgone through Diving Falcon, and 1 forgone through this effect), this increasing to 10d10 + 30 if you benefit from "Unbound Soul", and further increasing to 10d12 + 30 if you have advantage on the attack roll through that feature.
Additionally, whenever you finish a long rest, you gain one of the following benefits of your choice until you finish another long rest:
Path of Mercy. Whenever you reduce a creature's Hit Points to 0, you can instead reduced it to 1 as an act of mercy. A creature affected in this way while hostile towards you or your allies must choose whether or not to remain hostile. If a creature rejects your act of mercy to remain hostile, it dies instantly. If a creature accepts your act of mercy, it will no longer be hostile towards you. However, it will die instantly if it ever becomes hostile towards you again. Nothing short of the Wish spell can remove this effect.
Path of Perfection. Whenever you hit with a weapon attack amplified by your "Unleashed Strike" feature, the damage roll is maximized.
