Base Class: Warlock
Through some form of contact, willing or not, you have become inextricably bound to a Phoenix, an ancient elder elemental the likes of which date back to when fire first began; when the flames of life first roared into existence.
Although your covenant may not have been willing, your patron has gained a level of sentience from the contact, and it now sees this as an opportunity to achieve ends it could not from the Elemental Plane of Fire. Thus, it has begun to speak to you through an arcane method, telepathically communicating images and feelings through one of several methods. Roll a d6, or choose from the table below to find the method that best suits your patron.
| d6 | Method |
|---|---|
| 1 | Your patron speaks to you through the crackling of fire, through the way it shifts and swirls into new images and sounds. |
| 2 | Sunlight rays will turn into images of creatures, people, places, intentions, things that convey feelings to you. |
| 3 | You see sparks in mirrors, and when you look hard enough, you receive visions from your patron. |
| 4 | Cardinals and other brightly-colored birds will stare at you. If you stare back, you receive visions from your patron. |
| 5 | You see visions in the froth of boiling water from your patron. |
| 6 | You receive dream-like visits from your patron, visions and feelings and the like. |
Additionally, when you first made contact with your patron, it changed your body or personality in some manner. Roll a d10 or choose from the Quirks table below to learn how you were changed.
| d10 | Quirk |
|---|---|
| 1 | You have a strange fascination with fire. |
| 2 | Somewhere on your body there are distinct burn scars that cannot heal. |
| 3 | Your body is covered in golden tattoos that only appear when you're on fire. |
| 4 | Your body sheds orange dim light in a 5-foot radius around you. |
| 5 | Your eyes have white pupils that glow like small stars. |
| 6 | You are far more stubborn than you were before. |
| 7 | You feel extremely tired on cloudy days. |
| 8 | You get exceedingly nervous and irritable when it's cold around you. |
| 9 | You have an affinity for animals, birds in particular. |
| 10 | Your body has distinct orange-yellow metallic feathers in your hair, like streaks of gold. |
Phoenix Expanded Spell List
The Phoenix lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you. Additionally, you have access to the cantrips Control Flames and Produce Flame.
Phoenix Expanded Spells
| Spell Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 1st | Feather Fall, Burning Hands |
| 2nd | Continual Flame, Scorching Ray |
| 3rd | Fireball, Revivify |
| 4th | Wall of Fire, Banishment |
| 5th | Reincarnate, Immolation |
Aetheric Napalm
The air crackles with fire-aspected energy around you. Starting at first level, when you hit a creature with a spell attack, you can use your bonus action to deal an additional 1d6 fire damage to that creature. This damage increases to 2d6 at 6th level, 3d6 at 11th level, and 4d6 at 16th level. Additionally, you can speak, read, and write Primordial.
Starting at 11th level, when you use Aetheric Napalm on a target, that target explodes in a fiery burst. Every creature within a 10-foot radius around the target must make a dexterity saving throw, taking 2d6 fire damage on a failure, and half as much on a success.
Seeping Smolder
At sixth level, you have become more attuned to your use of magical flames. As a bonus action, you can turn into a form of pure fire, which lasts until the end of your next turn or until you choose to end it, with no action required. In this Fire Form, you have a walking speed of 40ft and are immune to fire damage, and you can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. A creature that touches you while in this form must make a dexterity saving throw, taking 2d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.
On Eternal Wings
Upon reaching 14th level, you are able to take on a semblance of your patron's true power, and become a Phoenix Avatar. This form lasts for up to a minute and requires your concentration (in the same way a concentration spell would). In that form, you have the following benefits:
- Once per long rest, as a bonus action, you can sprout wings made of orange-metallic feathers, which grant you a flying speed of 50 feet.
- When you do so, you cause a massive fiery explosion around yourself, and your physical appearance takes on aspects of the very bird you have made covenant with. Everything within a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on you takes 5d6 fire damage.
- Afterwards, flames continue to exude from your form. At the start of each of your turns, each creature of your choice within 10ft of you takes 3d6 fire damage.
- These spheres spread around corners. It ignites flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried, as well.
- In your transformed state, you do not provoke attacks of opportunity by flying out of an enemy's reach.
- Additionally, you are immune to fire damage, and ignore fire immunity and resistance on other creatures.
- And, for every turn you are in this form, you gain an additional 10 temporary hit points, to be carried over once you are out of the form.
If you fail to maintain concentration, the sheer power and intensity of what you have called forth turns against you. This includes when the spell ends, and includes when the caster intentionally ends the spell. At this time, several effects occur at once:
- Firstly, you take 1 level of exhaustion.
- Secondly, you are stunned until the end of your next turn.
- Thirdly, untamed flames explode from you. Each creature within 20ft of you must make a dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 12d6 fire damage plus 1d6 fire damage for each turn you were in your Avatar form on a failed save, or half as much damage on a success. You automatically fail this saving throw, due to being stunned.
Fiery Death & Rebirth
At tenth level, you begin to take on aspects of your patron. You have resistance to fire damage. Once per day, when you fail a death saving throw, you may choose to cause a fiery explosion with a 10-foot radius around you, and your body turns into an egg-shaped clump of cinders. All enemies within the blast radius take 3d6 fire damage. During your time in egg form, you are immune to all damage. At the start of your next turn, you return to life with half your maximum hit points.
