Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

Hoplites are highly trained warriors, versed not only in strategy and tactics, but in the glorification of the warrior's spirit, the basis of an ethos that forges an unbreakable bond between members of a military unit.

They are most known for their fighting style combining the use of spears and shields. For the purposes of this sub-class, hoplite weapons are defined as the following: spear, javelin, trident, or xiphos (shortsword).

Battle Fervour

When you choose the Hoplite archetype at 3rd level, you gain Fervour that is fuelled by special dice called Battle dice.

Combat Training. You learn three Combat Training abilities of your choice, which are detailed under “Combat Training” below. Many abilities enhance an attack in some way. You can use only one ability per attack.

You learn two additional Combat Training abilities of your choice at 6th, 10th, and 15th level. Each time you learn new abilities, you can also replace one ability you know with a different one.

Battle Dice. You have four Battle dice, which are d8s. A Battle die is expended when you use it. You regain all of your expended Battle dice when you finish a short or long rest.

You gain another Battle die at 7th level and one more at 15th level.

Saving Throws. Some of your abilities require your target to make a saving throw to resist the abilities effects. The saving throw DC is calculated as follows:

Combat Training save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength or Dexterity modifier (your choice)

Battle Hardened

You have spent so much time on a battlefield, you value the solace downtime activities bring you. Beginning at third level, you gain proficiency with one type of artisan’s tools, and whenever you are within 5ft. of an ally who wields a Shield, deal two-handed damage with any Hoplite weapon, even when wielded as one-handed.

Combat Training

The Combat Training options are presented in alphabetical order.

Cadence

When you move, you can expend one Battle die, roll the die and multiply the result by 5. You may allow one ally to move that far, immune to Opportunity Attacks.

Co-ordinated Assault

When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can expend a Battle die, and use a bonus action to direct one of your companions to strike. When you do so, choose a friendly creature who can see or hear you and roll one Battle die. That creature can immediately use its reaction to make one weapon attack, adding the Battle die to the attack’s damage roll.

Hamstring

When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can expend one Battle die to attempt to knock the target down. You add the Battle die to the attack’s damage roll, and if the target is Large or smaller, it must make a Strength saving throw against the damage DC. On a failed save, you knock the target prone.

Hoplite Style

This Combat Training focuses on the weapons of the hoplite such as using either a xiphos (shortsword), or spear in combination with your shield. You have plus one (1) on attacks using any hoplite style weapon listed above. You must be holding a shield for the benefit to apply. This benefit increases to a plus two (2) at level 7.

Moiroloï

The Moiroloï carries within it historical witness to the collective memory. It is a treasury of the human reaction to extreme experiences. The violent events undergone by a people, which lamented in an imaginative manner the untimely death of the young.  - Dimitrios Katsoulakos.

On your turn, you can use a bonus action and expend one Battle die to sing a dirge and bolster the resolve of one of your companions. When you do so, choose a friendly creature who can see or hear you. That creature gains temporary hit points equal to the Battle die roll + your Constitution modifier.

Today black is the sky, black is the day,
today all are sad and the skies are weeping.
Brothers we march, brothers we stand,
Charon awaits, oars sweeping.

Phalanx Wall

Also referred to as the 'shield wall', when standing within 5 feet of an ally who is also wielding a shield, you are both considered to have half cover (plus two to AC). Up to two allies adjacent to you, on either side, may benefit from this feature.

Sarissa Strike

When you make a melee weapon attack on your turn, you can expend one Battle die to increase your reach for that attack by 5 feet. If you hit, you add the Battle die to the attack’s damage roll.

Shield Brother

When another creature damages you, or an ally within 5 ft., with a melee attack, you can use your reaction and expend one Battle die to reduce the damage by the number you roll on your Battle die + your proficiency modifier.

Stabbing Wall

When a creature misses you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction and expend one Battle die to make a melee weapon attack against the creature. If you hit, you add the Battle die to the attack’s damage roll.

Strategos

When you take the attack action, you can expend 2 Battle dice to immediately allow two allies to move half their movement and make an attack, adding one Battle die to each allies AC until the start of your next turn.

Threshing the Wheat

When you make a weapon attack roll against a creature, you can expend one Battle die to add it to the roll. You can use this ability before or after making the attack roll, but before any effects of the attack are applied.

Fight in the Shade

You are a professional soldier. You work as a unit and can keep your enemies at bay with reach weapons. Starting at 7th level, you gain the following benefits: when within 5ft. of an ally, you gain resistance to any ranged weapon damage, and advantage on Dexterity saving throws to avoid area of effect damage.

When you take the Attack action and attack with a Hoplite weapon, you can use a bonus action to make a sweeping/swatting melee attack with the flat of the blade. This attack uses the same ability modifier as the primary attack. The weapon’s damage die for this attack is a d4, and it deals bludgeoning damage.
While you are wielding a Hoplite weapon, other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter your reach.
When you hit a creature with an opportunity attack, the creature's speed becomes halved for the rest of the turn.

Battle Fervour Unleashed

At 10th level, your Battle dice turn into d10s. At 18th level, they turn into d12s.

Heroic Accuracy

At 15th level, due to training and pure heroic will power, you have mastered your hoplite weapons and have uncanny accuracy with them. If you miss on an attack roll using one of your hoplite weapons listed above, you may re-roll it. You may use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, before completing a long rest. When you roll initiative and have no Battle dice remaining, you regain d4 Battle die.

Battle Fervour Joy

At 18th level, your Battle dice turn into d12s.
