Base Class: Monk
Prerequisite: Dwarf (Optional with DM permission)
The Way of the Mountain comes from a fundamentally dwarven hatred for magic. Fuelled by their hated for the Casters, they subconsciously harness their Ki to reinforce and harden the Weave around them. To the Followers of the Mountain Way, all forms of magic are considered reprehensible. Even in Dwarven society, they're Anti-Magic views are considered extreme, so their Monasteries are found in the remotest summits of mountain ranges, where the extreme environment and harsh elements harden their resolve and distaste for convenient Magic. Every tragedy caused by the misuse of magic is recorded in the Monastery Libraries, dating back to the Death of Mystra.
The Dwarves that teach the Mountain Way view Ki, not as a form of magical energy that flows through all things, but pure, stubborn willpower that dwarves are famous for. While some outsiders have been permitted to study the Way of the Mountain, any attempt to explain Ki's true nature to the Mountain Masters has always devolved into shouting matches and banishment from their Monasteries, sometimes via the nearest window. It has been demonstrated that understanding and accepting the True Nature of Ki undermines the Way of the Mountain and stops the use of any of its Monastic Traditions.
Initiates are encouraged to leave the Monasteries once trained, to seek out Magic and put an end to it. These Monks are called Corlar-Ol, which in dwarven means Magic Killer. It isn't uncommon to find cells of Corlar-Ol set up in Mage heavy cities and their authorities have learnt to be suspicious of Travelling Dwarves with no armour. Corlar-Ol are encouraged to return for a festival held at the Winter Solstice in the Monastaries, called "Rorn-Der", where they bring their confiscated hordes of Arcane focus's, spell books, grimoire of forbidden knowledge and other magical items, to be destroyed in massive bonfires and vats of molten iron.
Material Expertise:
At 3rd Level you gain proficiency in one Artisan Tool of your choice.
Unyielding Aura
At Level 3, as a bonus action you can spend 1 Ki point to generate an Unyielding Aura which will surround you for 1 minute, or until you fall unconscious. The effects include:
- You cannot be considered a willing target for spells and healing spells have no effect on you.
- You are unable to inflict any damage that isn't Bludgeoning, Piercing or Slashing Damage and you can't cast spells.
- All your saving throws against spells have advantage.
- All spell attacks made against you have disadvantage.
Deflect Magic
At Level 6, as a reaction you can spend Ki points to reduce damage you take from a spell. For every Ki point spent, you reduce your damage taken by one Martial Arts Die. If you successfully reduce the damage to 0 or below and the spell used a spell attack roll, you can deflect the spell back at the caster using your wisdom as a spell modifier.
Nulling Strike
At level 11, when you hit another creature with a melee weapon attack, you can spend 2 ki points to attempt a nulling strike. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or all spells cast by or on the target are negated until the end of your next turn, including spells cast before your next turn. When the con save is failed, all spells with a duration greater than instantaneous, concentration or otherwise, are ended and all their effects are ended.Instantaneous spells cast before your next turn ends have no effect.
Example;
If the target cast Spike Growth on the battlefield or had Hold Person cast on them before they failed their save against a nulling strike, those spells end.
If the target has cast Blindness/Deafness on an enemy or had charm person cast on them before they failed their save against a nulling strike, those spells end.
If the target casts scorching ray at an enemy or has eldritch blast cast at them while they are under the effect of nulling strike, those spells have no effect.
Finger of Order
At Level 17, as an action you can spend 3 ki points to touch a target and attempt to use the Finger of Order. The Target must make a Constitution Saving throw or one of the following effects will occur (dependant on the type of target):
- If the Target is a Celestial, Elemental, Fey or Fiend: the target disappears instantly, banished, returning to its home plane.
- If the Target is a Construct, Magical Item (excluding artefacts), Ooze, Plant or Undead: the target becomes inanimate and devoid of magic.
- If the Target is an Aberration, Beast, Dragon, Giant, Humanoid, Monstrosity or Other: the target is petrified.
To make the effects of the Finger of Order permanent, concentration must not be broken for one minute beginning immediately after the finger was used. If concentration is broken before 1 minute, the target reverts to their initial state. If permanent, the effects of the Finger of Order can only be reversed once the monk is dead or a wish spell is used to undo the effect. The effects of the Finger of Order does not automatically reverse upon the Monks death, but will if the Monk is brought back to life. The Finger of Order does not work on Artefact weapons or non-magical objects.
