Base Class: Rogue
Sly and cunning, these scoundrels use the shadows to heighten their potential, using them as a natural extension of themselves in the form of tools and even a shadowy companion to fight alongside them.
Cowl of Shadow
At 3rd level, you are able to call upon the shadows to aid you. You gain the following benefits:
- When you are wielding no other weapons, you can cause shadows to cloak your body, making it into its own weapon. In doing so, your unarmed strikes gain the finesse property and can use your Dexterity modifier. On hit, you deal 1d6 + your Strength or Dexterity (your choice) necrotic damage. Unarmed attacks from this feature also benefit from Sneak attack.
- You gain sneak attack against a creature whenever your Shade Beast is within 5 feet of you. You also gain sneak attack against a creature if your Shade Beast is within 5 feet of it.
- If you can't already, you learn to speak, read, and write Abyssal
Shade Beast
At 3rd level, you are able to weave shadows into a companion that fights alongside you. It is friendly to you and your companions, and it obeys your commands. See this creature's game statistics in the Shade Beast stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places. You determine the creature's appearance and whether it has two legs or four; your choice has no effect on its game statistics. Your shade beast could take on the appearance of a shadowy wolf, a black tiger, or some other appearance.
In combat, the Shade Beast shares your initiative count, but takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you use your bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If your are incapacitated, the Shade Beast can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.
If the beast drops to 0 hit points, it fades away into a black fog. Your beast can be summoned again by spending 1 minute to perform a ritual to do so. You can re-summon your beast a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per short or long rest. You can only have one beast at once, creating a second beast causes the first beast to perish.
