Base Class: Rogue
"The rogue steps through the swirling mist, seeming to disappear in front of your eyes. You see a flash of movement to one side but it is gone before you can turn to face it. Sharp pain peirces your side and as you fall the last image you have is the grey eyes of your killer fading to nothing."
Those rogues that have been born with, developed or bargained for a connection to the Mists of Ravenloft have gained a minor control of their strange properties. These rogues dance in and out of reality in a burst of mist, allowing them to get the drop on opponents. They can also summon the mist to aid them, allowing them to sneak past the most vigilant guards or gather whispers from the wind itself. The strongest have even been known to drag unwitting creatures into the mists themselves.
Mist dancers tend towards pale skin and hair, looking almost albino at higher levels. Their eyes are always grey and seem to be swirls of mist rather than solid colour.
If you want to create a mistdancer that is not linked to Ravenloft then any other planar connection could be substituted. Elves could step in and out of the feywild or shadowfell for example. Check with your DM for what would be allowed in your game.
Dance of the Mists
Starting when you take this subclass at level 3 you gain the ability Dance of the Mists (DOTM). This ability can be used once plus one use per proficiency bonus (3 times at level 1, 4 times at level 5 etc.). All uses are recovered on a short or long rest.
The DOTM has two ways it can be used.
Guarding mist can be activated with an action and will give a character 10 mins of aid from the mists. During this time all stealth, investigation and perception checks are made with advantage as the mist hides the rogue and tendrils seep through the area feeding information back to them about his surroundings. During this time the rogue is immune to suprise attacks.
Deadly mist can activated using a bonus action an will give 1 combat round of assistance from the mists. During this round the rogues movement speed is doubled as they flit in and out of the mist in short unpredictable teleports. This erratic movement causes all attacks against the rogue to be made with disadvantage and allows all attacks to be made with advantage.
Dance of the Mists
Uses of Guarding Mist or Deadly mist.
Improved Dance of the Mists
When you reach 9th level in this subclass your Dance of the Mists becomes more powerful allowing you to lose your physical form in the mist or strike quickly and accurately.
Guarding mist now allows you to blend your form into the mist itself. While guarding mist is active you and any objects held or on your body can become insubstantial allowing you to pass through gaps no smaller than 1 inch in diameter. You also gain a flying speed equal to half your normal movement speed and are able to hover. While in this state you are not able to attack or interact with objects.
Deadly mist now allows you to attack twice when taking the attack action but only on a turn when your Dance is active. If these attacks are against different targets each can trigger a sneak attack.
Strength of mind
When you reach level 13 in this subclass your long association with the mists and the horrors that dwell within have hardened your mind and spirit.
You gain proficiency in wisdom saving throws and resistance to psychic damage.
Horror of the Mist
When you reach 17th level in this subclass you gain the ability to have the horrors of the mists assault your foes. Upon a successful sneak attack you can have the horrors grab your enemy and drag him into the mist. The target takes 4d10 damage and is thrown back out of the mist at any point of your choice within 20 feet of their starting position.. Once you use this ability can cannot use it again until you have completed a long rest or you use 2 uses of Dance of the Mists to use it again.
