Hey all, I'm just building an inventory for a game shop - as in a shop where you go to buy toys and games from. Has anyone got any fun items (magic or mundane) that I could include. Nothing ridiculously powerful like The Deck of Many Things or the Wild Chaos Anarchy dice, just fun stuff that would exist in a D&D game shop.
So far I've got;
Charlatan's Dice
Chess Set
Dice Set
Dragonchess Set
Pan Flute of Stories (a pan flute that creates harmless illusions when played)
magical paper birds which fly around for 1 hour after they are opened.
a mundane dnd pun like "Offices and Accountants", where you can roleplay someone in a boring job where there are no monsters and bosses are to be obeyed, not fought.
jack in the boxes
rock paper scissors dice which project an illusion of a creature, each beats the other (roll as a D3, something like dragon-kraken-giant. dragon beats kraken, kraken beats giant, giant beats dragon. illusionary fight plays out when rolled).
pranks - a small potion which turns your hair a bright colour for 1 hour. stinkbombs which really stink. look to the Harry Potter books for some inspiration for prank supplies!
I personally would have a Board game set entitled:
"Professors and Offices", where you can role-play being a student, office worker, or entrepreneur. Note, it is NOT true that all entrepreneur are crooks trying to cheat their employees.
I had a fight in a toy shop in my campaign recently. A few of the things that it included were:
Monster plushies with realistic roars when hugged.
Dragon toys that you could put water and dye inside for it to throw as colored mist from its mouth.
Marbles.
Fireworks.
Wooden swords that sounded like metal when clashing.
Singing toys/clockworks that played musical instruments.
Mechanical bees and beehive. The beehive worked as a honey dispenser and could walk on the walls and ceiling to act as a discoball.
A mechanical dragon (the toy maker had originally built it for a concert but the order got cancelled because a real dragon moved to the area and it was considered in bad taste).
Whoopy cushions that were combined with stink bombs.
that'd be like someone from Iowa playing 'settlers of Iowa'. o.O
IMO, a resident of Faerun would more likely play 'Settlers of Earth'...because its fanciful and simple....just like Settlers of Catan is for IRL folks.
You could add "Offices and Humans, the world's greatest role playing game". When my group renovated Trollskull manor, they set up a gaming table reserved just for patrons to come in and spend hours wasting away the day in that epic fantasy game of a world populated only with humans where magic is replaced by 'science' --- staring at spreadsheets, scribbling with pencils, throwing one exciting d6 (because in Offices and Humans, the whole table only gets one d6), and arguing over the math for characters' commute times.

That's not a bad idea IRL. Hmmm...
Anyway, it could be like one of those railroad board games that simulate industry 100 years ago. Just simulate Faerun during the Time of Troubles. They all know minor facts about that time long ago, just not the detail. Maybe the board game has avatars fighting to control the land.
Toy bow and arrow set for children with 'safety' arrows(arrows with bean bags affixed to the shafts). Attach a warning to it like "must be used with adult supervision, gnomes and halflings require proof of age to purchase".
Dolls of Famous Adventurers or Heroes from the area. If the group gets well known in the area, you can have dolls modeled after them.
Toy Adventurers Kit, containing a toy sword and shield, a couple of sparklers (for "spell effects"), 3 cherry-flavored "healing potions"(just cherry liquid), and some fake coins as loot.

A rather comprehensive list of free WotC D&D resources

I think that a cool thing to add would be a fake battle axe that makes a squeak when it hits.
Cones of Dunshire
Jump to conclusions
Jumanji
A box just marked Roy, when you open it you go unconscious for a few minutes and live out the life of a guy named Roy from birth to death

Stick horses that make horse noises.
Brooms that increase jump distance by 5 feet.
Balls that return if thrown or kicked.
Chia pets that dance after their "hair" grows in.
Dice.
Toy instruments that play simple toons if you play them.
Wonka candy - Everlasting Gobstoppers, Wonka Gum, Hair Toffee, Lickable Paper, Fizzy Lifting Drinks
"Sooner or later, your Players are going to smash your railroad into a sandbox."
