(Not sure if this counts as Homebrew or not - let me know where I should post, if this isn't right)
Hey guys, just wanted to share an idea I came up with and had a lot of fun with last night. I had a 2x2 stone brazier in the middle of a 6x6 room, surrounded by enemies. When my party arrived in the room, combat started, and I gave the brazier a turn in the initiative order. When its turn came around, the fire would turn either black or white and pulse out into the room, with everyone hit by the pulse getting a certain effect. I rolled 3 dice;
D4 - determines the range of the pulse, with 1 being immediately adjacent to the brazier and 4 being the entire room.
D6 - determines whether the pulse is black (odd numbers) or white (even numbers). The white pulse heals everyone hit by it, while the black pulse does necrotic damage.
D8 - determines the amount of healing/damage done.
It was fun watching my players try to fight while this was going off. Unfortunately, I made the fight a bit too easy so I didn't get to play with it for as long as I'd liked, but I definitely saw enough to know that I'll be using it again at a later date. I didn't put a saving throw on the effects as it was a fairly low amount of damage for my players levels, but obviously it can be tweaked to make it a much more effective/devastating obstacle. When the Sorcerer tried to destroy the brazier with magic missile, I had it eat the missiles and make another pulse for each one, which resulted in the other players yelling at him, which is always fun.
That is actually pretty cool and it seems like there are a lot of different options that are somewhat similar to it.
Such as the room is checkerboard like and every turn it deals damage but it only deals damage to Black squares on one turn, and than white squares the next, and keeps alternating.
But your idea seems like it would be pretty cool to add to fight, and I'll probably see about adding the Pulsing Brazier or maybe a variant of it in a future session.
It would also be interesting for melee characters, since if an enemy is on a black space and next turn every white space takes damage, than if you want to attack the enemy with melee you end up taking damage from the brazier, it could also be a way of making players utilize the shove mechanic and spells with knockback.

Oh, I love the checkerboard idea. I could straight up get my players playing chess mid combat.
