This. Dissonant Whispers is especially useful in a party that has many melee heavy-hitters, like Barbarians, Paladins or Rogues. Forcing opportunity attacks from those classes is very powerful. Melee Rogues will be very grateful to you for getting a second Sneak Attack on the same round.
Faerie Fire is another very effective spell with limited availability; only Bards, Druids, Light Clerics and Archfey Warlocks get it. Advantage on attack rolls benefits everyone, and negating invisibility is extremely useful since many spells require sight.
Bane is still a great option for protecting your allies, since it's like increasing their AC by an average of 2.5, and most monsters have bad CHA saves. It's also a great way to help you and other spellcasters stick their save-based spells like Vicious Mockery, Faerie Fire or Burning Hands.
Cure Wounds gives you more bang for your back when it comes to healing, but Healing Word is a better option for reviving allies at 0 HP. If there's a better healer in the party, like a Life Cleric, you should consider just taking Healing Word and leaving the main healing to them.
Agreed on Dissonant Whispers it can be incredibly useful especially for driving an enemy back towards the tanks if it is getting to close to squishy members of the party. Charm Person and Detect Thoughts can also be very useful for story purposes.
A good question to ask is what type of bard are you wanting to play. Are you going to be focused on a support role with your magic abilities, this could include healing, support magic (enhance ability). Will you be aiming for a bit more combat ability, Use of Pole arms is good for this and Blade Ward can be useful before you are about to go into the fray, or do you want to be a somewhat offensive magic bard with some damaging spells and using Bane and Faerie fire to make it easier to hit enemies yet harder for them to retaliate. Or would you like to focus on a theme for role playing purposes.
But I feel it is important to bring it up again DO NOT FORGET YOUR INSPIRATION. Besides just being plain useful it can be a lot of fun for character interaction.
