So I cancelled my subscription to DnD Beyond a bit while ago and then came back to see them all locked up. How can I get them back?
You need to resubscribe to unlock them. This is to prevent people from subscribing for one month, make a thousand character sheets, and then unsubscribe.
You should be able to unlock up to 6 characters. Look for a button or a dialog to let you do that. if you clicked through that option initially without seeing it, you may need to contact support (the contact us link below) and ask for them to help you unlock 6 characters. If you do so, please only submit one help ticket and be patient. They can get backed up sometimes and resubmitting tickets only makes the delays worse.
When you transition from a subscription (unlimited characters) to free (6 characters), the system can't tell which six characters you'll want to maintain access to (until if/when you resubscribe). As such, all your characters will be unlocked and you can choose to unlock up to 6. The rest will remain locked (they won't be deleted/removed) until you re-up your subscription.
