I've just made my Master Tier subscription, yet I am unable to use Class options from the Player's Handbook. I'm trying to create a Path of the Totem Warrior barbarian, yet the option doesn't show on the dropdown menu. Do I have to purchase the book on top of having the subscription? Have I just wasted money?
The Master Tier subscription does not grant you access to content in the various rulebooks. They are, as you noted, purchased separately.
From the page where you purchased the Master Tier subscription:
Hero Tier
Intended primarily for players, this tier removes ads, allows you to create an unlimited number of characters, and add publicly-shared homebrew content to your collection to use within the toolset.
Master Tier
Intended primarily for Dungeon Masters and player groups, this tier grants all the benefits of the Hero tier, and allows you to share all of your unlocked official content with other players within your campaigns so content does not have to be unlocked individually.

D&D Beyond can be used for free and contains information from the following "free to use" sources published by Wizards of the Coast: D&D 5th edition SRD, D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, and Elemental Evil Companion.
Content from other sources, such as the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, or Monster Manual, will need to be purchased from the Marketplace or accessed via another user sharing content with you via their Master Tier Subscription.
Further questions may be answered already in the Purchase & Pricing FAQ.
