I believe there is a bug when creating a 3rd lvl+ Gnome Illusionist regarding cantrips. As a Forest Gnome, the cantrip minor illusion is free. As an Illusionist, you gain the (Improved)minor illusion cantrip again, and if you have minor illusion already, you can choose another. The option the choose another cantrip is not available, however. My cantrip spell list simply shows that I have both the minor illusion and improved minor illusion, along with my chosen ones.
In other words, as a gnome I should know Minor Illusion (1j. As a level 3 illusionist I should know three(2,3,4) plus Improved Minor Illusion or an alternative (5). Yet I am restricted to 4 total cantrips, with Minor Illusion listed twice.
Just made a Gnome Illusionist, still experiencing this bug first reported in March 2019..... (In all other ways Dndbeyond, you do a fantastic job and are amazing. It's what makes little things like this so frustrating!)
They are currently working on "rules exceptions," which might include this issue. In the meantime, the work around is pretty simple: create a feat or a magic item that gives you the additional cantrip.
I fixed this by making a variant forest gnome that lets you choose a wizard cantrip instead of just getting minor illusion. Choose minor illusion initially, change it to something else once you become a 2nd level wizard and pick up improved minor illusion.
Hmm, took this feat and character still not getting the extra cantrip, and I have no clue why it's not working
Which feat? One you made? One you found? If the feat doesn't add the cantrip, either 1) you aren't looking in the right place to add the cantrip, 2) the feat is made incorrectly or 3) there's a server caching issue (most likely if you made the feat yourself ad added it to your character right away).
For 1, make sure you are looking the feat manager, where you choose to add the feat. once you've added it, there should be either a blue ! or an upside down ^ by the feat, telling you that you have options to choose. You select the cantrip from there.
If it's 2 and you created the feat, please post a link here. If someone else made it and you added it to your collection, you will need to contact the creator.

I see the problem now, needed to click the little blue ! , which I must say is far removed from intuitive. When you go to Add Spells and keep seeing the cantrip number maxed out instead of the expected 3/4 you get frustrated thinking something went wrong.

Hope this made sense!
Thank You!
I also have experienced this. Is there a work-around?
Also experiencing this bug.
Hello DarkBeaver,
This is a known bug, and is among other minor bugs to fix. Thank you for the report!
You can create a feat to grant yourself an additional cantrip for the time being.
I hope that helps!
The easiest way to create a feat to fix this is to Use an existing Feat as a template: Magic Initiate (Wizard)
Then remove the extra spells leaving 1 cantrip.
December 2020 and this still needs a work-around.

Just bumped my Gnome Illusionist up to lvl 2 and noticed this is still not addressed, for anyone who is concerned.
Thanks!
