I just recently bought the players handbook to get 28 new sub classes. I don't see them when making a character sheet even after going through each filter option. Am i misunderstanding the difference between sub classes and classes in the character creation or is there a tech issue?
After you've selected a Class in the Character Builder, you need to make selections from the Class Features. A few classes choose their subclass at Level 1 - Cleric, Sorcerer and Warlock. You make the selection of subclass in a particular class feature: Divine Domain for Cleric, Sorcerous Origin for Sorcerer, Otherworldly Patron for Warlock.
Other classes don't select a subclass until level 2 or 3, so you'll need to level up before you can do so.
...If you still don't see more than 1 or 2 subclasses to select for a class, then click this link to make sure your account entitlements are in sync.

Subclasses only come into effect when your character reaches a certain level in a class. Some do so immediately at 1st level, some require 2nd level and rest require 3rd. The subclasses are named different things for each class. You will need to level your character up to see the subclass option which will use the subclass name.

Also, make sure you bought the full PHB and not the compendium -- the compendium lets you read the book, not use it in the character builder.
