... the spells and some of the features from the book still show up for my players. There are certain spells for instance that are from Strixhaven that I want to review before possibly putting them into our campaign. But again it is still showing up for them to pick. Also, I know other players can share content in the campaign but I'm the DM and I have blocked certain sourcebooks shouldn't that override another player sharing it?
Unfortunately for your use case, turning off sourcebooks doesn’t work that way. I turns off access to the compendium (that is the text of the “book”) but not to the character options like spells, subclasses, etc. For some campaigns this is a good way to do it: the DM may want the players to have access to the character options, but not to the text of the adventure.
But then there are other use-cases, like yours, where the DM wants to turn off access to character options, too. This is not currently possible. I hope that eventually they will get around to providing us with much more granular controls in this regard.
Darn, so it's not an error just something that needs to be implemented.
on a side note, I would really love if DnDbeyond made it so you could actually create your own class on here. I know they have reasons they won't do it, but I have some MCDM classes I'd love to incorporate into the fold for my players using DnDbeyond.

All you can 'block' is players reading the books.
Yes - this sucks.
Yes - this should be changed.
