I'm not happy with it, since I believe the pre-order text is exceedingly misleading, but since character sheet backdrops and theme colors are an irrelevance anyway I'm not going to complain.
I can offer something more of an explanation of why the pre-order themes and backdrops are only made available when the product goes live.
The backdrops are made using artwork from the publication (in this Dragon Heist) so cannot be prepared until such time as Wizards of the Coast send the completed book & assets across to D&D Beyond. When the completed book & assets are sent across, the priority is to ensure that they are entered into D&D Beyond correctly and any dev work needed is understood and completed - creating the themes and backdrops is a lower priority than ensuring the product is ready for release day. This means that it's only possible to create the themes & backdrops usually a few days before release.
Quick question: Per the description: Pre-ordering on D&D Beyond will grant early access to adventure portraits, character frames, character sheet backdrops, and theme colors. When can we expect this access?
Thank you!!

Thank you, Stormknight. The text is misleading. Honestly, I think a simpler explanation that I didn't consider until now is that technically the product is being released early. It doesn't appear for sale at non-WotC affiliated bookstores until September 18th, I think. That said, it would be appreciated if D&D Beyond would make that clear in the product description to avoid further confusion. I am grateful for the extra perks no matter what. I just thought they'd be coming a little earlier.
The extra perks are most definitely early access, as to this point they haven't begun selling any of them outside of being a preorder bonus, though it is a potential plan for the future. It is possible that without preordering DH you won't be able to access the themes/backdrops/frames at all... But if they do decide to sell them otherwise, you have gained early access to them through preordering (to be released with the book), which is far earlier than anyone who did not preorder will have the chance to purchase them.

According to the preorder page for Waterdeep: Dragon Heist...
“Pre-ordering on D&D Beyond will grant early access to adventure portraits, character frames, character sheet backdrops, and theme colors.”
Seeing as how this comes out in 4 days, shouldn’t this already be available? I don’t have access to any of this material.
