When I went to make a character in my newly formed campaign, I sorted by PHB races only. Variant Aasimar shows up in that list. This will be confusing to my new players.
Also, backgrounds include "haunted one" and knight which I've never heard of. I only purchased the PHB (and some Xanathar's) so I was hoping that would be the only content my players will see. Is there a way to enable content sharing only to show material I allow instead of all the weird stuff DnD Beyond has for free as well?
I’m not not sure I’d quite quality those particular items as “weird.” Variant Aasimar is from the DMG; I agree it’s odd—and confusing—for it to show up, but rather than turn it into a race purchase from a source that has only one race, they got permission to make it free.
”Haunted One” is from the Curse of Strahd and was freely available from WOTC for AL purposes. Knight is actually in the PHB.
They are in the process of developing content management. The initial pass will allow you to turn on and off specific sources. I’m snot sure how that will effect Variant Aasimar. I thought the Variant was considered a PHB item, but I see that currently it is listed as coming from Volos.
The variant aasimar is free (or from DMG, IDK how that was decided), but the official aasimar race (which has subraces) is from volo's thus it is coded as such.
It looks like the 2 races from the DMG (variant aasimar and variant eladrin) are added to basic rules (DMG isn't even a listed as a race source) and basic rules races are bundled into PHB races.
It might be a bug/oversight, as there is a LOT of overlap between basic rules and PHB.

Okay, I guess I will just request them not to pick that race. Thank you. Seems like it would be a standard thing to be able to control what is shared

The knight is a variant of noble.
Sounds like the fact that is shows up under the PHB is a bug then
