I'm halfway through a campaign and my Dwarven Cleric has come into possession of a simple, but homebrew, 'Staff of wisdom'. It's supposed to add a +1 to the Spell DC, Wisdom Saving Throws and Wisdom Skill Checks and that is how the item is configured, yet somehow it's adding +5 to the Spell Save. Any ideas?
I added it to my collection and tested it and it is only adding +4, but my character’s Wis mod is only +3.
What happened is that when they created the item, they accidentally set it to add your Wis mod again and the +1 on top. They must have done this:
Modifier—>Bonus
Modifier Subtype—>Spell Save DC
Ability Score—>Wis
Fixed Value—>1
They should have left “Ability Score” as blank. They will now have to “create new version” of that magic item, edit the modifier and save it. Re-save the whole magic item. Remove the old version from their “collection” and then republish the magic item. That is why it is best to not publish until after playtesting. They do not have to publish their creations for the players in their campaigns to use them.
Update - Now resolved.
