Hello! I think I may have encountered an issue. For preface, I am playing a Level 3 Half-Elf Paladin.
I purchased the Azorius Functionary background and was trying to add the spells onto my Paladin's Prepared list, but I noticed that "Ensnaring Strike" was not listed in the list at all. At first I thought, "Oh, I read that incorrectly. I can't add it to my Paladin's list. It's a Ranger spell, I probably can't learn it anyway."
Until I went to make a sample Ranger character and it still didn't show up in the Ranger's list of spells. Also, "Friends" is not showing up under the Cantrips, either. I know Paladins and Rangers don't have Cantrips, but the spell "Message" still shows up in the lists for both my Paladin and my sample Ranger. I have unchecked and checked the "Enable MtG Content" option under settings, I have refreshed the page, I have even deleted the sample characters and made new ones. Nothing I try is adding "Friends" nor "Ensnaring Strike" to the lists with the Azorius Functionary background.
Both the Friends and Ensnaring Strike spells are not included in the free basic rules, instead each are found in the PHB and would also required to be purchased in order to access them on your character sheets.
Yes. With all the different combinations of purchases available through mix-and-match, plus the fact that they let individual purchases contribute to the cost of the book if you buy it later, it's too complex to let subclasses or backgrounds or even items grant you access to a spell as well. Trying to figure out the pricing on things would be impossible. Especially here where the spells are from a different book than the background.

So even though I purchased the Azorius Functionary background, I’d still have to purchase “Friends” and “Ensnaring Strike” separately?
