My character has fashioned an arcane firearm that resembles an old-timey arquebus or large flint-lock pistol... he has made modifications to it as part of learning new spells. There is a projectile cannon launcher on the underside (see grenade launcher on a machinegun) for his catapult spell, there are metal tongs coming out the end as a tazer (shocking grasp), and so on....
Now for my question, if he finds an All-purpose tool - the description reads that the character must hold it to gain +1 to attack... Would most here read that two hands are needed, one hand for AF, one hand for APT? Or would you agree that with a description that the APT clips on to the side of the AF, as a module?
By RAW, it takes two hands, so you can't have a Shield, AF, and APT in use all at the same time. A friendly DM may overrule that, of course.
Note that, in Eberron, Warforged can have a "wand sheath" to essentially not need a hand for a wand, which gives some notion of how powerful/valuable (or not) being able to combo them would be (it's a "common" item iirc).
Thanks for the reply... its what I figured. RAW I would need three hands. I guess I was hoping that someone more savvy than I with the rules would have a solution :)

I ask because my artificer likes to use a shield.
You have to hold the tool. The wording on Arcane Firearm is basically word salad, but if your DM fixes it to also be hold, like every other similar mechanic in the game, then you need merely hold both items, like you can with any other two focus items that both buff (e.g. if you multiclassed into druid and needed to hold a moon sickle). Since the firearm has any shape you want, and the APT can have a wide variety of shapes, you should be able to find a pair of shapes you can hold in one hand at once, if you need to.
For example, tell the APT to be string, wrap it around your hand, and tell the firearm to be a wooden bracer with a handle you can slip your hand around. Hey presto, two things you can assuredly hold at the same time.
