What are some of the ways you roleplay a Flash of Genius usage working for different kinds of checks? I can whip out a book for something like a history check, but what do you do for say a Wisdom save?
"I bonk thee over the head, jostling you back to your senses" maybe?
Con save? Other ability checks? I'd love to have a few ideas in my pocket.
It depends heavily on whats going on, what the check is for, and whose doing it. Like fighter making a strength check trying to lift something, and I go "bend your knees". PC trying to save against a charm affect, and I just yell out something nonsensical, and it triggers a moment of dissonance that distracts them from the spell. Doing an Investigation check I comically pull out a bubble pipe for me and the one I'm helping, so we feel smarter about it. But probably the coolest one was a moment when an enemy fireball spell was cast, and I threw my shield to hit an enemy that already failed their save, and knocked its body onto my ally, meat shielding him from the bulk of the blast. Second coolest was the party druid wild shaped as a flying creature, carrying 2 of our allies and my Homunculus on his back, and got hit with a Hypnotic Pattern. So the flash of genius was to instruct my Homunculus to zap him awake, so he wouldn't get incapacitated and fall out of the sky.
I play my Goblin Artificer like he has low grade access to toon logic, so it gives me a lot of leeway for more absurd depictions of how things play out.
Last session I used flash of genius and a bunch of sausages in my inventory to beat an Animal Handling check, to mellow out an Owl Bear chasing our Wild Magic Sorc. And yes, the Owl Bear was the Sorc's fault. I'm waiting for the random opportunity to do some kind of CHA contest against someone else, and make the flash of genius me making random noises while the other guy is talking, throwing off their game. Oh, and probably one of the group's favorite gags is how I integrated the All Purpose Tool into our travel carriage. So if I need something tool or work shop related, I just open a hatch, or pull a lever, or slide out a table, and its becomes the work space with everything for the job. Our land map is on one of the pull down shades, and before we got an Alchemy Jug, I had a micro brewery in an overhead compartment. And when we're on foot, I have a chest that has similar abilities lugged around by a Steel Defender. Once on a ship, I gave the chest a kick, the lid flipped open, a table popped out and unrolled into a small cocktail bar. And if anyone here knows about the movie Brain Doners, I have a Shift Weave outfit that does the Jacques bit where he rips off the top outfit and the one he wants is the next layer under it. If the wizard didn't already have the bag of holding, I would had done the "empty your pockets" gag.
