Hello everyone, apologies if this has been answered but I couldn't find relevant information. I am a new player, and this is my first post, so if it is in the wrong forum, please direct me to the correct one.
In my artillerist's character sheet, force ballista's damage is 2d8+4 (My INT is 4). Is this a bug? Nowhere in the description of the spell does it say "add your spellcasting modifier". If it isn't a bug, could someone explain it?
The correct damage is given on the feature for the Force Ballista.
Due to a limitation in the way the action system works, we aren't able to set the Force Ballista to show as an attack without adding an ability bonus (the action system observes the core rule that ranged attacks add an ability bonus to damage).
As such, we didn't set the Force Ballista feature to display as an attack. We can't prevent you from customizing the feature on the sheet to display as an attack, but if you do, it will show the wrong damage.
tl;dr - we're aware and we're sorry, but without a big chunk of dev time, we can't fix that currently.
Apologies if it came off as complaining/criticising, I was mostly asking as I'm not confident in my knowledge at this point, and I thought I was missing something. I have come to trust D&D Beyond more than my understanding, so I wanted to double check what I could be missing.
I will just give it a minus fixed value equal to my INT, problem solved 👍

Why not set the force ballista up as a pet/companion?
Yeah I was puzzled by that too, glad to have found this answer!
Now that we are aware, there's an easy fix we can all do on our character sheets: customize the Force Ballista attack and add a -Mod damage bonus to compensate :)
I’ve just encountered this peculiarity myself and was wondering whether this is still the case given that other ranged spell attacks (e.g. guiding bolt and ice knife) can do damage without a bonus keyed in and the force ballista attack is described as being a spell attack? So if it’s been encoded as an ordinary ranged attack which possibly still has this ability bonus restriction that’s incorrect, unless it’s the case you can’t add spell style effects onto other (bonus) actions which is fair enough.

customise and set bonus damage to minus whatever your damage bonus is
