I've never played a barbarian, I've always played some sort of caster, so being a big ol' bag of in your face hurt is a new concept.
Long and short of it:
Utgar Baulderkin aka The Iron Ursine
I've rolled up stats, sitting at 18 Str, 16 Dex, 18 Con, Mountain Dwarf Barbarian, entertainer: gladiator. Low stat is 11 int.
The idea is that he's the equivalent of a pop culture icon, spends his days entertaining the crowd, is considered the "good guy" similar to Hulk Hogan, John Cena, and the likes, and is overly charismatic. His ancestors made a deal with the gods, doing work for them, and in return were blessed with the fire of the forges in their souls. This translates to a barbarian rage, however Utgar doesn't tap into this, the red curtain intimidates him. He's been accused of doing great harm to a fellow gladiator outside of the ring, and as such has been benched while the investigation is going on. He just happens to be a bit of a wanderer when he's idle, so he took off to "clear his mind" and has found himself caught up in the goings on out in the real world.
---
I'm not sure which path I want to take, berserker would be fun as it would tap into his fear of the rage taking over, however I can see totem being useful for tanking. What kind of builds would some of you come up with to fit the story?
I would pick the subclass that seems like the most fun to you and then make it fit RP-wise. Does he want to turn his rage into a force of good? Or will he give into his inner violent nature? Many of the barbarian paths are a way to channel their rage into a force of protection (Storm Herald and Ancestral Guardian in particular come to mind) as well as to give into that rage as a source of power. A Battlerager is a part of dwarven society and could be the source of your character's ancestral ties. A totem barbarian could use his totems to guide him on a path the guide his wild nature, or to succumb to it completely.

Rename rage as divine (don't know your own) strength. Both paths seem fine, if say pick the one you're exited about.
