I was setting up my Dragonborn Barbarian and it gives me the option to have a feat selected even though I am not 4th lvl. The options it is giving me are...
Firearm Specialist
Grappler
Svirfneblin Magic
Is it a mistake or is there an option that I am missing and I could actually select one?
when you say that, "it gives me the option to have a feat selected even though I am not 4th lvl." - do you mean in the character builder, or on the character sheet itself after you created the character?
If it's on the character sheet, it's intentional that the character sheet allows customisation outside of the standard rules, to cater for situations where a DM may award an additional feat.
The character builder will prompt you when the rules allow selection of skills, feats, spells and other features.
The character sheet however, as above, allows much more flexibility as we discovered that it is common for DMs to award additional feats, proficiencies and spells, outside of standard progression.
Hey greylon66, it sounds like you have yet to purchase the PHB digital for dndbeyond... I remember seeing only those options listed for my wizard. Once I purchased the PHB the normal list of feats showed up on that same menu.
If you have the PHB in a hard copy (or any other copy) go to chapter 7 customization options. In the back of chapter 7 you will find feats. Using a battle axe with the feat savage attacker will jurastically increase your damage (get to reroll damage once per turn and take the higher number)
Grappler is a good feat for barbarians who like to have control on the battlefield. Especially since rage gives you advantage on all strength checks (including grappling). I’ve also seen tavern brawler where barbarians fight with their bare hands.
Sometimes it just depends on what you want to play. Some of the more generic barbarians might choose Tough, savage attacker, or great weapons master. But you can choose tons of others. Want a Barbarian to cast magic missile? Take magic initiate.
Theres no right answer to this question. I like to take feats that not only bump my mechanical stars, but also make good role play opportunities. Having your paladin take magic initiate because they have an ancient draconic bloodline passed down through generations in a great house of nobles would be a fun way to use sorcerers spells.
Take what you think is going to be coolest with your character.

It is on the character sheet. It offers those 3 feats. I am still getting used to the 5e system and wanted to make sure I am not missing anything.
