I hope this is the right place to ask this. I've had this idea brainstorming for a while just after starting a new campaign with a Blood Hunter. This is for way down the line if we make it to level 20 or even 19.
It is as follows: Blood Hunter: Order of the Ghostslayer at level 16/ Barbarian: totem warrior at level 4 with the totem being bear. Strength build with great weapon fighting and great weapon master in mind.
It is pretty good because those barbarian levels will keep you alive since you take damage from the rites, but will stop you from getting 1d10 on rite damage, which might be worth more than a feat. Consider 17 BH 3 Barb. That's all, and good idea!

So just to give more context my character stat wise right now is 18 str, 12 DeX, 15 con, 12 int, 14 wis, and 13 con. He is a half-elf. Profiecy stats are str and wis.
Feats for this build were tough, alert, great weapon master, resilient (constitution) and finally sentinel.
With your suggestion if I went another level in blood hunter should I give up the resilient feat or sentinel?
IF you were going to give one up, I would actually say Alert. It doesn't give you much except high initiative and anti-suprise abilities, and as long as you go in combat, you're going to be dealing some really good damage. If you wanted to keep alert and go with 4 feats, go with resilient. Sentinel is nice, but you're already dealing really good damage at that point, and it just makes opportunity attacks better. Hope I helped!

It did thanks. Although another possibility is I could use the last ASI to increase my wisdom to 16. This way I could use supernal surge three times instead of two. Combined with reckless attack it could be potent.
Unless i find an item that could bring it up. In which case 17 BH and 3 Barbarian is the more viable.
So after much deliberating I have decided on your suggestion to 17 Blood Hunter/3 Barbarian. Thank you for all your help in hopefully making this my best build.

I’d recommend ASI. From my experience, Alert feat isn’t really doing much. You can’t be surprised, and you gain a bonus to Initiative. But otherwise, it depends on the DM. Does yours like to surprise the party with ambushes? Is he constantly using creatures that act 1st most of the time? If so, i5 is worth taking. But I feel AC is better.

So far in the campaign there has only been one surprise instigated by one of the players. So it looks like it just depends on the situation which from what I understand tends to be rarer then common.
You guys have given me much to consider. Leaning towards taking the ASI. Thanks
Although another thing with Alert is that enemies who are stealth don't get advantage on attacks because I can't see them.

Its hard cause the build is very feat heavy. I will think about it. Thanks!
No problem! :)

So it's me again. I am in between keeping the alert feat or taking an ASI to get my dex up to 14 for an increase in AC. Thoughts?

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
I agree with Bobo. Alert is much better for Ranger's Gloomstalker, and Rogue's Scout and Assassin.

I know I'm really late but using reckless attack means that you're enemies would have advantage against you anyway.
True but I would have advantage against them too.
