One of my backup characters is a tiefling bard whose harp is the skull of his ancestor, and the strings are stretched between the long-dead tiefling’s horns.
Of course now Yasha on Critical Role has a harp made of a spine, so now it feels a bit derivative of that, but oh well.
You need a race with powerful build, good strength (gauntlets of ogre power) and boots of striding to avoid penalties. An harpsichord weights about 280 lbs.
Many bards have problems with carrying musical instruments and weapons. One fun solution is to take tavern brawler, and use the instrument as improvised instrument.. With expertise in athletics, you can then grapple quite effectively.
If the instruments breaks, you can use prestigidization to clean it, and mend to fix it. Unseen servant can also help fixing it, and doubles up as drummer.
My latest project is a Priest (not a cleric) Bard/Warlock who plays bagpipes, but one of the pipes is a hollowed out harpoon. That's whathe uses as his spellcasting focus.
Have a Violin and Hurdy Gurdy, but then really struggled with the last one and of course bothered google for weird instruments and went with the Hornucopian dronepipe. Have also managed to pick up a Panpipe of the sewers (can control rats) along the way.
However while doing that I also came across the Badgermin. You want weird....
There is a Brazilian traditional instrument used by capoeira fighters called Berimbau. It's basically a musical bow, an archer bard could use this concept to play music on any long bow.
I'm redoing an existing character into a Bard (former Warlock, you know how it goes) and I really, really want him to have a gold-plated kazoo as his primary instrument. Any of yall have any idea how much that should cost, since I have to buy my equipment myself?
I recently made a dwarven barbarian/bard who wields the shredder axe, a battleaxe that also functions as a bass guitar. If I ever get the chance to use him I’ll be so happy
I'm in the middle of making a Magic Pan Flute, it's called the Flute of Souls, my current character has collected hundreds of creatures, last breaths upon it's notes....and at some point ill retire it to use in a campaign of my own. it will only after 1000 hours of play time, allow you to cast spirit guardians at lvl 6.
So, this thread has been quiet for a month, but I have something I wanted to add.
Although this isn't an instrument, I believe my fellow Bards will want to hear about the news ...
My Bard, Cadenza, was gifted a +1 Rapier with the light property and is therefore allowed to use two weapon fighting with his rapier. So he was faced with a decision; should I retire my existing silvered rapier or should I carry both rapiers. After a lot of thought I decided not to carry both, but it was a hard decision.
You see, as soon as Cadenza had some real coin he got his rapier silvered. This gave him the help that against many undead he would still be able to deliver melee damage. As it happened, when he got the sword silvered, the smith also etched "Cadenza" into the Forte of the blade (the portion closest to the handle) and this produced the perfect balance of stiffness and weight to cause the blade to "Ring" when it was withdrawn from its scabbard. Not only does the blade ring, but it rings at 432Hz, a perfect musical A. So Cadenza and his Bard friends can use the rapier to tune and check the tuning of their instruments. Its renown is spreading among the bards even though it is a mundane weapon.

dude you already have an thread all about your beloved Cadenza, and this has absolutely nothing to do with bard instruments and it is not likely that many people care much
But regardless, you did decide to keep your original silvered rapier right? no amount of magic and special properties can be worth discarding such an special weapon, especially one that you have spent and additional 100 gold on to get silvered and one that has such an colorful past and your name etched into, there are rules provided both in the dungeon masters guide and xanatars guide to everything for how to create magical items, so if you truly wished you could have this blade turned into an magical weapon

Mine is a clavicembalo (harpsichord).

if you are not playing with encumberance, do a lightfoot halfling and have your instrument be an organ.

Combat Ukulele anyone?
Bardic Inspiration is just someone believing in you, and I believe in you

Fisrt, create a Dwarven female, next give her a Bard class with attitude of playing musical instruments.
Then make her artisan of musical instruments, and give her a BONGO drumm.....
Can you guess who gonna be the Buffer / Inspirator on every random Fight.... or in a freightening encounter ??????
My Ready-to-rock&roll chars:

So I was wondering, if a bard/artificer was born, could they have a tinkered lute?
*electric guitar strums in the distance*
