Bards are known to be flamboyant and stylish in both performance and looks. Everything about them is a statement. What is your bard's go to outfit? The iconic wear that you wear and are known for wearing?
My bard is a Brown Bearkin so he has every right not to wear any pants in public since his fur is covering his junk. He does wear a leather vest (leather armor) with WARRIORS printed on the back and a skull with wings below it. Under his vest he wears a red t-shirt with the word BAZINGA written on it. Usually it's the BAZINGA t-shirt, but he's been known to have other fun shirts, he loves graphic tees and the next shirt he'll wear will probably have as follows:
As the Dragonborn offspring of a Sliver Dragon who is TOTALLY into collecting Musicians, my bard is more on the Flamboyant end of the spectrum.
A winter-sky-blue mesh cape sequined with dots of snow pays homage our Clan, Ciq (Falling Snow) over a dark-blue velvet duffel-coat (pockets inside and out for convenience) and thigh-high black leather boots.
Standard leather armor for defense, for mobility and occasional acrobatics, but the rest of the attire is stylized.
Boots with trimmed color accents, a feathered, wide brimmed hat, longcoat or trenchcoat for colder weather, with sleeves tailor-made to conceal the occasional dagger or explosive device.
Adventuring being what it is, a bard is likely to beaten and weathered, either soddened by fierce storms or singed by dragonfire, so frequent visits to the town tailor are to be expected. Enchanting clothes with magic is totally within a bards wheelhouse, and should be pursued. I once had a spear chucked at my bard, stabbed through his chest, only to have my bard casually step aside and turn invisible as his mirror double fell to the ground, dead, from the magic property of the coat.
Style and charisma, above all. Have to put on a good show.
One of my bards has fierce bright blue knee-high suede boots. They have gold buckles all down the sides, with big knee covers. She also has a fine outfit she wears while performing that is a silver sequin jumpsuit with feathers all down the neck and shoulders and arms. She looks like a disco rockstar. :P
The other bard I'm playing wears a long, lovely dark blue brocade jacket with bright brass buttons all down the front, and double buttons on the cuffs, which are large and turned to reveal a contrasting purple fabric. The jacket collar is turned down, revealing the same purple fabric, but can be turned up and buttoned into a scarf-like tunnel. Her shirt is white silk, and she wears a leather bodice of green, not cinched tightly, but fitted. A leather belt, covered in beautiful etched designs, circle her hips, and pouches, as well as a large journal, hang from several connecting straps. Her pants are a light brown, loose in the legs, but cinched below the knees with a row of brass buttons, with a small pearl inset in each button. Her calves and feet are bare, but she carries a set of tall winter boots as well as some soft shoes for harder terrain. She sometimes wears a large brimmed hat to keep the sun off her head, and it is made of fine green wool, decorated with a yellow silk ribbon and a brass bell around the brim. She keeps it around her neck by a yellow silk string. She carries a purple silk handkerchief inside her jacket pocket. It is embroidered with a blue bird in the corner and her initials. She's not as overtly flamboyant, but loves wearing color and fine fabrics.
My rock gnome bard, Ingbar, wears a long-sleeved bright orange collared shirt with a gold-trimmed light blue vest worn overtop of it. Between the two layers he wears a magical studded leather cuirass with the letters 'BK' written across the upper-chest area in red. On his legs he wears a pair of faded dark-green pants and a pair of purposefully mismatched bucket-top boots on his feet. One of the boots is mostly bronze-colored with gold folding down and over from the top, while the other boot is black with red folding down over the top. He wears a magical monocle acquired from another plane over his left eye. For a while he wore a belt of dwarvenkind prominently around his waist, but he still wears the results of his prolonged exposure to it proudly on his face in the form of a full, and wildly curly purple beard.
For the sole reason of insisting that this ensemble actually came together rather well in practice instead of the fashion-disaster that many might be led to believe I thought I'd include an image I drew up of him about a year ago.
Bards don't have to be entertainers. Like the PHB not every local minstrel is a bard and in fact a true bard is rare. The most iconic image of a bard type for me is the way Lloyd Alexander wrote them in the Pyrdain Chronicles. Especially the side character Adaon son of Taliesin the head of the bardic order. He wore a brooch that heightened his perception of the world around him that was marked by three lines representing truth, love, and knowledge... And ended up dying for those ideals even in the face of having a wonderful life planned ahead.
His garb was humble, minimalistic putting funtionality first, and well made. I like this concept for a Lore Bard... Charisma doesn’t have to be a rock star type it can come from inner strength as well
The appearance of my bard (human, non-D&D RPG system, but very close to a Lore College bard) has changed during is career as an adventurer. He started out as a flamboyant performer, with lots of colourful clothes, chasing every skirt he could find and seeking out trouble . During his travels he became a wiser man and a well of wisdom and knowledge. His clothes (unless they were disguises) were always of high quality and practical for being on the move. I made him keep trinkets and accessories from all the places he had been, which became part of his apparel: a pearl earing from the lizard folk island, a silk scarf from the hidden empire in the east, a quill made out of griffon's feather etc. He had a dozen items of that kind, each with its own history he would happily talk about with people over a fine glass of wine.
