I currently have a level 1 fighter / 3 sword bard mark of shadow bard. I am still playing around with the character concept since we are still early in the campaign. I pictured them to great with a blade. I picked up defense with fighter and two weapon fighting with bard. I have 16 ac with 18 cha and 16 dex. My plan was to bring dex to 18 at 5 for all that it offers. Upon further research I noticed greater shadow mark which isn't great but piqued my interest for my build. That got me looking for another dex half feat. Resilient dex is an easy choice but I also came across revenant blade. This sounds like a perfect half feat for a sword bard. I was staying away from duel wielder because it did not offer any dex and is completely over shadowed by +2 dex.
My problem comes from my fighting styles not matching up with two handed fighting. The sword bard doesn't get great weapon fighting. Would it be broken if I asked my dm to let me choose this instead of the options given to the sword bard. I can take it with fighter 1 instead of defense but I still lose my style from sword bard. I liked the idea of not needing to hold a focus outside of the weapon and want to stay as a melee/caster hybrid. Would another college work better if a gwf sword bard seems too much?
It's a trade-off. Great Weapon Fighting lets you re-roll 1s and 2s on the damage dice. Two-weapon fighting style lets you add your modifier to the off-hand attack.
Revenant Blade feat ideally should tie into your backstory, but it does two things: it makes the Revenant Double-Bladed Scimitar a finesse weapon so you can use DEX modifier instead of STR, and then it changes your two-weapon fighting style off-hand attack to 2d4 instead of 1d4.
IMO, doubling the off-hand damage dice AND adding your DEX mod to that attack is more valuable than re-rolling the 1s and 2s. From what I've read, GWF is on average a +1 improvement on a double-bladed scimitar. (Great Weapon Master feat doesn't help much because the -5/+10 only applies to heavy weapons, which the double-bladed scimitar isn't.)
Going Two-Weapon Fighting plus Revenant Blade would be a +2.5+DEX improvement (on average) on the off-hand attack, which is WAY better at low level, and still better after a swords bard picks up Extra Attack.
Sooo......If i read this correctly sounds like a Darth Maul style fighter you are after.
Bear in mind switching to Great Weapon Fighter would mean you'd have to use Strength for your attacks so It might be worth asking your DM if you can use something like this:
Double Ended Scimitar (martial weapon)
Size: 5ft tip to tip, cost 50 gp (due to having to be specially made/balanced)
Damage: d6 Slashing
Properties: Two Handed, Finesse.
Special: Double Ended weapon, If you have the Two Weapon Fighting Style you can use a bonus action to make an off hand attack with the reverse blade.
That way you are still effectively using two scimitars you've just got a bespoke weapon to use.
