The concept of Legendary Instruments of the Bards are pretty simple...these are elegant or powerful examples of musical instruments that can only be wielded by bards, and sometimes only by bards of the certain skill level.
They typically have certain magical effects, usually being that they allow the bard to cast a selection of spells once per day..."Fly", "Confusion", "Cure Wounds", "Wall of Thorns", "Faerie Fire", etc...spells that either add utility to what the bard already does, and especially giving the bard more spells to offer with their limited spell list.
What I'd like to ask all of you is this...what are some good ideas that you have for Legendary Instruments of the Bards?
What sort of item would you desire of such a fabled instrument? What spells would these instruments allow the bard to cast? Is there a theme?
Examples:
Wand of Vocal Amplification - "A short, slender rod of metal with a flanged end, almost like a small mace...the rod lets the bard cast "Thaumaturgy", "Command", "Confusion" & "Shatter"...and doubles the range of bard spells when used as a spellcasting focus.
Viol of Weeping Stars - "A viol of blackened wood and silvery strings that evokes feelings of melancholy and haunting beauty...allows the bard to cast "Moonbeam", "Sickening Radiance", "Levitate", and "Crown of Stars".
Lute of Blistering Fervor - "An unconventional, angular lute engraved with evocation runes and seems to resonate with fast, aggressive playing...allows the bard to cast "Fireball", "Lightning Bolt", "Gust of Wind", "Erupting Earth" and "Tidal Wave".
...and for added fun, what are some side effects if a player who isn't a bard (or skilled enough), tries to play these instruments?
Do their fingers start bleeding when they try to strum the stings?
Exploding drums?
Do they deafen everyone around them?
Do they accidentally conjure "Evards Black Tentacles" from a tear into the Far Realm like "The Music of Erich Zann?"
Lute of flesh and hair - "A lute which appears to be encased within dried flesh patched together over a wooden frame with an eye embedded in the body. The strings are stretched lengths of hair of varying natural colors and the sound is a haunting crackling tone." Allows the bard to cast "eyebite" "animate dead" "crown of madness" "cold touch" and "blindness/deafness"
When used by a non bard roll a Cha saving throw of 17. On a save the user becomes deafened for 60 seconds, on a fail the user is afflicted by 'panicked' by eyebite as the lutes eye turns black until they have moved 60ft away from the lute and into cover. The lutes eye need not be facing you to be in eye contact.

The Haunted organ- A huge organ of wood with brass plating and spiring pipes made of a cold blue metal, unidentifiable to this realm. It that sits inside an abandoned church, an oddly instrument clean considering it's surroundings. Playing the organ, no sound comes from the pipes past the odd whistle of the air moving through them. However the dead of those around the church and arise from their slumber and are under the command of the organ. Those who do not pass a Char/wisdom saving throw will themselves be enthralled by the organ and become one of it's many victim, hearing the loud bellowing of the organs are they are forced under it's command. They can remake this roll every 5 in game minutes, but each time they try the pass becomes harder and harder (say lower their passive score by 1 point each time they try)
The band of one- A unremarkable wooden pipe that has a sweet tune to it that when played bring up and series of musical illusions of other people playing in tune with the pipe. The number of people and type of instruments are infinite, the band can be as big or as small as the player wants, though acts as an illusion that cannot be interacted with, only seen and heard.
Symbol of the sun- A set of huge golden symbols with an intricate set of inscriptions and astral carvings that require a strength check of 15+ to clang together will produce the spell Sunburst without cost to the player. These symbols can be used 3 times before they disintegrate. Upon a non bard using them, the player has to roll a d10.
Harmonica of Summoning: the wielder of this instrument, may cast a summoning based conjuration spell. Depending on your alignment, you can cast the following:
Evil: 2 lesser demons, 1 greater demons
Neutral: 2 conjure minor elemental, and 1 conjure elemental
Good: 1 conjure celestial
The concert used for this items ability is charismas modifier+your spellcasting level
You can use this items effect once every short/long rest.
I was thinking of something altogether different when I read the title of the thread. I was thinking of unique legendary instruments, not instruments with legendary powers.
Prestissimo's Nine hole Flute - playable only by Prestissimo because she has an extra finger on one hand
Fortzando's Bone Necked Lute - playable only by Fortzando because it is a double bass (extremely long strings) requiring both great strength and reach of the fingers on the left hand
Glissando's Three belled Horn - Playable only by someone with extremely voluminous lungs and extraordinary dexterity to play three brass instruments in harmony at once (the horn has a bewildering array of levers and plungers to control the valves of three instruments at once - imagine the buttons on a saxophone but set on a French horn)
There are any number of crazy ideas but they would be quest items not magical bonanzas in my world.

The Accordian of the Air Genasi - this accordian appears beaten and torn, yet plays beautiful music (for an accordian) in the hands of a bard. It can cast Gust of Wind, Stinking Cloud, and Fog Cloud, each once per long rest. In the hands of a non-bard, the noise generated is so piercing that everyone within reach with a melee weapon must take a bonus action to smack the wannabe musician.
Pipe Organ of the Mad Maestro - ported on the back of an oliphant which is actually a golem, this gigantic, seemingly fragile pipe organ is remarkably durable and incredibly potent. It can cast Meteor Swarm, Prismatic Sphere, and Earthquake each once per long rest, A non-bard who tries to use it has a 40% chance of casting one of these three spells (determined randomly) in a way detrimental to the wannabe musician (GM's choice)
electric guitar, can cast all the loud thunder damage spells such as thunderwave and shatter, plus heat metal, and you can use it as an greataxe that deals an additional 2d4 lightning damage on a hit. It does not grant the bard extra versatillity like the other instruments from the other ledgendary collages, but it is neat.
perhaps it can even cast summon lesser demons, who are unable to attack the holder of the gituar for as long as they are playing sick tunes, thus making it less pointless, perhaps you can even pay for the material component by volentarily taking 1d4 thunder damage
similarly, perhaps a pair of satyr's pipes, allowing the caster to replicate the effect of the satyrs panpipes straight out of the stat block but it also has conjure woodland baings (only able to conjure satyrs and dryads)
no idea what to call these tho, i am not good at names
Yeager's Percussive Buckler - A Shield, about the size of a large dining plate, composed of a brass-like metal covered in smaller identical brassen disks that are loosely connected to it, allowing them to move and jingle-jangle similar to a tambourine or cymbals. Your AC increases by 2, and this magical item is considered a focus for bardic spells. It grants access to the spells Thunderwave, Thunderous Smite, Booming Blade, and Thunder Step. In addition, you gain resistance to thunder damage.
Named after Chuck Yeager.
Mallet of the Ever-Warring Essence - This instrument is functionally a Viol and requires viol proficiency. It is an Erhu made of beautifully hand-carved oak wood, displaying patterns of tigers and dragons flying up the length of the neck and reaching the head stock. It acts as a warhammer when wielded. As an action, the attuned wielder can perform using this instrument and conjure two ethereal entities, a blue dragon and a golden tiger, at a chosen location (Maybe like a 10x10x10 sphere?). The two will then proceed to battle, causing damage to the surrounding environment and creatures as they duel to the death. Creatures within the sphere take X amount of psychic damage when it spawns, and then take X amount when they start their turn in it.
As an bonus action on subsequent turns, the wielder may move the dueling spirits up to 15 feet in any direction.

It's ok Ranger, you'll always be cool to me.. Unless druid gets another use for its wild shape charges.
The Shawm of Harm (rhymes in Boston) Requires attunement by a Bard; playing without being attuned causes 3d8 psychic damage, half on DC15 WIS save. Playing a haunting melody to replace the V component of a Bard spell that causes illusion or damage increases the spell save DC by 2. In addition, the SoH contains 12 charges, and recovers 2d6 charges each midnight. A Bard may expend charges to cast Shillelagh (1 charge - shawm itself becomes the club); Inflict Wounds (2 charges); Shatter (4 charges); or Spiritual Weapon (4 charges). This seems like equivelent to the rare level IotBs - one could increase the spell levels available to make something legendary

Now there is an idea … play a musical instrument to fulfil the somatic and verbal components of a spell, while the instrument replaces the material components. I'm going to develop that some and use it. Thanks.

Fiddle of Gold: This beautiful violin is made of seemingly pure gold, but is not as malleable as would be expected. It also appears to possess a beautiful grain like a wooden violin would. The attuned user can cast Calm Emotions, Enthrall, Contact Other Plane (only beings in the Nine Hells), and Planar Ally (only devils) once per day. The fiddle regains all uses of its spells if the user plays the fiddle standing in a crossroads at midnight. If the attuned user is a Warlock with the Fiend patron, the Fiddle of Gold also acts as a +3 Rod of the Pact Keeper.

The Conductor's Baton of Leopold - an ensemble of spectral pixie-like musicians encircle the bard's head and play the music they desire. A selection of druidic wall and shape type spells would be appropriate - you draw what you want in the course of conducting
The Box of Radio Rahim - rectangular shape, long handle on top, circular ports from which music emits, controlled by the bard's willpower. Why not a Panflute that could summon 1d8 necrotic hands ( like the Magic Hand spell, just with Necrotic damage / appeal )????
Guess what if the Bard is surrounded by evil monters, what a nice ""TOOL"" there, huh ???
My Ready-to-rock&roll chars:

Once per day it allows you to cast the following spells
Control weather so that you can rock out in the cold november rain.
Calm emotions for when all you need is a little patience.
Destructive wave, to sate your appetite for destruction.
Teleport, for when you want to take the party down to the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty.
Mislead twice, so you can use your illusion (1 and 2)
Did you ever develop this item?
