Ok, hear me out.... I am playing a 50 year old guy from our world transported into the body of a Tabaxi bard in a D&D world. So, since he played guitar in a high school rock band, he's going to draw on that era's songs for my bardic spells. What songs would you all suggest? Here are my current spells/abilities:
Vicious Mockery Prestidigitation Healing Word Cure Wounds Disguise Self Sleep Heroism Heat Metal Lesser Restoration Bardic Inspiration Cutting Words
Love the idea, and so much to choose from. Offhand...
For inspiration/Heroism:
“You’re the Best (Around)” by Joe Esposito
“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey
”Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi
”For Those About to Rock” by AC/DC
Healing Songs:
“Dr. Feelgood” by Motley Crue
”Don’t Fear the Reaper”
Vicious Mockery/Cutting Words:
”Welcome to the Jungle” by GnR (specifically the “You know where you are...?” Part
Love those ideas! I came up with a few (some of a later era):
Cure Wounds - Never Gonna Give You Up (Rick Astley)
Disguise Self - Uptown Girl (Billy Joel) - she's a female Tabaxi bard who is down-to-earth
Heroism/Inspiration - Believe it or Not (America's Greatest Hero soundtrack), or All Star (Smash Mouth), or For Those About to Rock We Salute You (AC/DC)
Heat Metal - Play with Fire (Rolling Stones) or Hot for Teacher (Van Halen)
Lesser Restoration - Bring me to life (Evanescence)
Song of Rest - I wanna be sedated (Ramones), Enter Sandman (Metallica)
Cutting Words - Forget You (Cee Lo Green)
Sleep - Go the **** to Sleep (narrated by Samuel L. Jackson)
>Vicious Mockery - The Dead Milkmen "Life Is Shit" >Prestidigitation - Thomas Dolby "Blinded Me With Science" >Healing Word - idk >Cure Wounds - idk >Disguise Self - Simple Minds "Don't You Forget About Me" >Sleep - "Daydream Believer" (Remix released by Anne Murray in 1979, close enough and catchy enough to be proposed) >Heroism - Faith No More "We Care A Lot" >Heat Metal - Rolling Stones "She's So Cold" (very appropriate despite the name) >Lesser Restoration - A-Ha "Take On Me" >Bardic Inspiration - Spandau Ballet "Gold" >Cutting Words - They Might Be Giants "When Will You Die"
The thinking behind many songs is unrealistic as the titles do not (for the most part) fit the desired effects based on the actual lyrics.
Dr. Feelgood is about drugs and getting wasted. We didn't start the fire is about history. Every breath you take is about stalking.
Sweet Caroline would be much closer to a healing song. FireStarter by The Prodigy might work with some modification. It would be better to work with sea shanties and rework the lyrics as needed, IMO.
If you play a string instrument, I recommend looking up the Harp Twins or Two Cellos. They do covers of many 80's songs and would be great flavor for your campaigns.
For example, Good Vibrations for Bardic Inspiration
Vicious Mockery - Just a Friend Prestidigitation - Do You Believe in Magic, Healing Word or Cure Wounds - Never Gonna Give You Up Disguise Self - Sharp Dressed Man, Dude Looks Like a Lady, Express Yourself , You Can Call Me All Sleep - Sweet Dreams Heroism - Jump, Fight the Power, Super Freak, Push It, Whip It Heat Metal - Can’t Start a Fire without a Spark, Burnin Down the House Lesser Restoration - Billy Don’t You Lose My.Number, Sexual Healing, Modern Love Bardic Inspiration - She Works Hard for her Money / I Want Your Sex, All Night Long Cutting Words
Vicious Mockery - Another one bites the dust Prestidigitation - Magic Man Healing Word - Keep yourself Alive Cure Wounds - living on a Prayer Disguise Self - The Stranger Sleep - Good night my Angel Heroism - we are the Champions Heat Metal - smoke on the Water Lesser Restoration - Start me Up Bardic Inspiration -Pressure Cutting Words - Paint it Black

Bad company for Heroism
That's when stuff like this happens.
