Hello everyone! I'm quite new to D&D and it's the first time I'm actively playing in a campaign. I play a Level 5 Cleric (Life Domain), who has a WIS of 20. Now I wonder how many cantrips and spells I am allowed to prepare?
The level-up is very fresh and when I was still Level 4, I always had a total of 9 spells (cantrips not included) with me, but I was not able to freely choose all 9 of them. Now that I have my level-up, it seems like I'm allowed to take one additional spell with me - but the level-up forces me to pick two specific spells, taking away even more of my freedom in selecting the spells I wanna take with me. Something just doesn't feel right here. Plus, when I prepare my spells in D&D Beyond it seems like I am actually allowed to prepare more spells. I'm still a newbie and very confused. Hence, I'd appreciate your help a lot! Thank you!
You can prepare a number of spells equal to your wisdom modifier (with 20 that would be 5) plus your cleric level so you can now prepare 10 Spells, which you can change after each short rest. However, your clerics divine domain (Life) has a list of spells that you will always have prepared ADDITIONALLY to you normal spells. Those don't count to the 10 spells you get.
You can see those spells you'll always have in adittion to your normal spells in your cleric subclass.
Since you just turned to level 5 you got two more spells off of that list: beacon of hope and revivify.
So you should now be able to have an total number of 16 Spells prepared at each time (10 from Wis(+5) + lvl5 cleric(which you can change after a long rest) and 6 from the life cleric spell list(which you can't change after a long rest))

Thank you so much!
Because of their domain spells Clerics usually have the largest number of spells prepared of any caster.
