Considering a multi-class to Echo Knight(3rd lvl ftr). I believe this would not only give some improved fighting ability but also more mobility to deliver healing and assistance to other party members. Currently a 8th level Arcana cleric.
Not quite sure it’s worth it. Swapping spaces with it will certainly help with mobility, and it can be useful as a distraction but otherwise, I don’t know. You can attack through it, but are you weapon attacks very good? Remember you can’t cast spells through it, only make the attack action. And if your 8th level, that means you delay 4th and 5th level spells (not to mention higher level spells) by three levels. Stone shape is endlessly useful. Mass cure wounds is amazing. And how many levels in fighter? At least three to get the stuff, but then if you don’t take a 4th, you push back your asi; if you do take a 4th, that delaying those higher level spells even further
To me, being able to move around a bit and make a couple mediocre attacks is not worth the trade off of the better spells. And if you’re an arcana cleric, I’m going to assume you have high wis and int. Is your str or dex high enough to go into fighter. Do you have a good con mod to make unleash incarnation useful?
My con is 14 and through some luck I have gauntlets if ogre strength (str 19) and flame-tongue sword. I would probably not take the 4th level of fighter because I want the capstone cleric ability at 17th level.
Is this partly so you can use that flame tongue, since as an arcana cleric, you’re not proficient in it? Assuming it’s a longsword as it is traditionally.
And, just to be clear, the gauntlets do not meet the prerequisite to be able able to multiclass into fighter. Your base score (str or dex) has to be a 13.
That said, your attacks won’t be as mediocre as I’d suspected. And you will get to unleash 2/day, which isn’t too bad, either. So there’s some utility to it, but I still really don’t like pushing off those higher level spells and slots. Are you the party’s prime healer? If so, you’ll really want those slots. That’s kind of the thing, what’s your role in the party? You don’t want to spread yourself too thin.
I guess the other question is when will the campaign end? Most don’t go past 13-15, if that. So if you’re holding back on a fighter level to get a level 17 clerics power, but the campaign ends before that, you’ve kind of nerfed yourself.
I built him such that I might be able to multi-class originally if I wanted to. He is a wood elf. He is the main healer but quite honestly has had not to do much of it. We have a paladin, ftr/rogue, bladesinger, barbarian, monk and me. I did not want a straight support type character but one who could melee effectively as well. We had a sorcerer but he had to quit so now I have had to be more spell heavy. I have considered a switch to wizard also if I use my next ASI for IQ.
Our DM says he wants to go the full 20 levels.
