I'm playing my first character ever in an upcoming campaign, and I really want to play a Cleric of the Twilight Domain.
I notice that they get a proficiency with martial weapons and heavy armor, and I had mainly been wanting to go with a more dexterous spellcaster. Which of these two options do you think would be better?
Also, what kind of role could a Twilight Cleric fill in the party? There's a Life Cleric in the party, so I don't know how much extra healing power will be needed (other than my domain's Channel Divinity), and I'd like to try to figure out what spells or feats compliment the subclass features.
That's UA, and by the end of the month (in another 15 days, really), there will be an official version published. What the final will look like, we don't know.
That said, just because a class has proficiency with heavy armor doesn't mean you have to use it. Clerics are also proficient with light and medium armor, and proficiency with martial weapons means proficiency with rapiers, scimitars, shortswords, whips, heavy crossbows, and longbows.
There's not any reason to not be a dexterous spellcaster twilight cleric. Use a rapier and medium armor and you'll be good to go. Imo, melee clerics are something of a trap option. You're a primary spellcaster, so you should be doing what you do best: Casting spells. That means boosting your wisdom, not your str or dex so that your melee attacks hit often. I'd build a twilight cleric with that in mind. You can still melee in a pinch, but it's not what I'd be looking to do first, past say level 5 or so.
As far as healing goes, you should be fine. healing in 5e is terribly inefficient, and the life domain cleric will be best at it. Trying to out-heal monsters past level 5 is difficult; they do more damage than you heal for. So what's best is to try to buff them so they kill faster or take less damage and resort to heals mostly when folks go down. I'd be playing probably mid line; not forward blade to blade with the enemy, but in a position where I can support and react. I'd make sure that I keep bless on my front liners, and stay between the squishies and the badguys as much as possible.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I've been playing a tortle cleric of twilight for the last half a year and have been having a blast. Playing mostly as a melee support caster. Mostly front-line fighter who casts support spells, and not so much healing, Super high AC with tortle shell natural armor and shield. WIS is my top stat, but split my secondaries between STR and CON to be a solid front liner. Still plan on maxing WIS before touching those other stats though.
You could absolutely play this as a DEX based cleric with a rapier/scimitars and breastplate or studded leather.
The twilight cleric abilities seem a little over-powered and I am looking forward to seeing how they balance it in the official release in the new Tasha's sourcebook.
Honestly, I'm playing a Twilight Cleric and I rarely, if ever use a melee weapon although I am prepared to do so if needed. Most of the time I'm casting Shield of Faith before battle, Spiritual Weapon first turn, and Inflict Wounds after. When I'm out of spell slots, I sling Guiding Bolt Sacred Flame or somesuch. So I'm really never without spell based damage.
Like others have mentioned, to me, Twilight Cleric is more about buffing your party with those temp HP (and I have it on good authority that while that is tweaked, it is still there) and keeping them up and running. Anything other than that depends on how you want to play it.

In all seriousness though, I think where my Cleric is at, the change to the Twilight Sanctuary is minimal for me. I'm a 3rd level Cleric (soon to be 4th in a few weeks) so it's still pretty powerful once you get through the first couple of levels. It'll be interesting how it all plays out.

Insert interesting signature here.

it is there, and it still looks very overpowered.
