I have a Druid and it's my first time really playing one and I had a few questions. I wanted him to be one with nature in the fauna style, loves animals. Through adventuring we come across a lot of animals to fight and I just want to know if I should continue down this path or set limitations? He dislikes killing of animals if not necessary, how should I go about balancing that in combat or dire situations?

My (young and naive) druid always gives animals the benefit of the doubt - even when they attack another member of my group, she always tries to use Animal Friendship first to gain their trust. Doing this has given my character a bit of flavor even if it hurts the group sometimes (she always refers to wolves as "puppies" and has a tendency to get distracted by animals and abandons her post to follow them). She will attack animals if absolutely necessary, but only if they attack her first and Animal Friendship doesn't work.
That's a great idea to use animal friendship! Thanks for the pointers! We ran across some wild dogs and my character just sat down away from the party attackinh them. I of course tend to my parties wounds afterwards and I make my character do a prayer for life lost this way lol

This situation actually just came up over the weekend with my party. We found a nest of baby wyverns and the party wanted to kill them, which my druid found repulsive. It led to some great role-playing and in-character discussion, though. Ultimately, I had to cast entangle on them and watch while my party burned them to death. Good times.

Would have so left the party to die....and heal the Wyverns as the party brought their life down to zero. It would seem to unrealistic to me to just give in and go along with the slaughter of innocent animals.
I apply the "Jungle law" to my druid: killing to eat or to be not eaten.
This is how I would and have played a druid in various settings over the years, but I find the concept of a completely passive-to-animals druid really interesting! Potentially quite funny or thought provoking, depending on the situation.

Yeah, well. There were some other extenuating circumstances... like a mindflayer and army of zombie gnomes. Didn't leave much time for debate.
That could lead to some good party dynamics. If someone person is chaotic neutral and just wants to kill them, you could work against them. If you're lawful good, you could try to talk them out of it. If youre neutral good, you could do what Ashen warden said. If you're chaotic good, you could start some PvP. Situations like those could spice up encounters.
My druid differentiates between beasts, monstrosities, etc. He will defend beasts, but others are fair game for the party. It helps keep them from wanting to murder me as part of the encounter.
When I play a druid I take a piece of the avatar film where I I have to kill an animal I say a prayer over it to thank it for it's sacrifice to feed me and my party. And if the animals.al attacked me I don't do a killing blow unless I'm left no choice. I now like the idea of animal friendship first fight later and I'm gonna use a firbolg next so animal.als will understand me. But I suppose it depends on how literal you are to be natural neutral.
I'd say, try to get the finishing blow with a melee attack and make sure to just knock them out instead of killing them. Make sure everyone else does that too, of course.

Also a great idea! Having that as kind of a driving force behind my actions can make it easier for him to attack one if necessary! Thanks!

I have cast offensive spells between an animal and other party members to stop them attacking the animals. They soon learnt I would not allow it.
Hahaha Ashenwarden that's pretty funny. Though I think my party would kill me off!!

@Jackattack72 I'm their healer so without me they would have been dead many times...
IN any case, I would give inspiration to the druid that goes against the party to defend some animals.

Keep in mind that some evil druids worship Malar, the god of beasts and hunting.
