There's no rules preventing you from taking a short rest and a long rest on the same day. Meditating and communing with nature during a short rest for Natural Recovery is not the same thing as going into trance for your long rest.
Thank you, I felt that way but then I couldn't be sure, I already had a small tiff about the issue with meditation, the DM almost took it away thinking it was too powerful and can be abused, I had to clarify that the rules clearly stated I can only meditate only once a day.
All that Elven mediation gets you is that you can take a long rest twice as fast (4 hours instead of 8 hours) and you're not unconscious during a long rest. Basically, you're the guy they'll always pick to keep watch at night, especially since you also have darkvision. It's handy to have, to be sure, but hardly overpowered.
You've got this 100% right. You replace your 8 hours of long rest with 4 hours of meditation. During that time, you're semi-conscious. As someone else said, it's only helpful for keeping watch/getting ready faster. You're still only able to take one long rest per day/24 hours. You're just able to travel/do stuff for 20 hours a day
The limiting factor on Long Rests (and also Meditation) is that you can only benefit from 1 per 24 hours.
So even if you have a party of all Elves, you can't get the benefits of multiple long rests and adventure longer then a party of humans. That said a party of all Elves is nearly impossible to sneak up in their sleep as they can sleep in a circle facing out.
Keep in mind a non-Elven long rest is 6 hours of sleep and 2 hours of "light activity" so, while Meditation cuts the Long Rest in half, it doesn't always save a lot of time. That said 1 or 2 elves in a party put "watches" to shame.

So i have a Wood Elf Druid and elves can meditate (only once a day) for 4 hours which equals a long rest.
The druids have natural recovery so I can gain a 2nd level spell slot or 2 1st level spell slots after a short rest.
So the question is, am I able to take a short rest and meditate in the same day? Or will the DM treat these 2 abilities as the same thing?
