When a druid wild shapes into an animal, lets say a brown bear.... does it technically become the bear?
This questions is aimed in the context of spells ....
Would Hold Person still be able to effect the druid in bear form ? What about Dominate Beast obviously both will not work in the druids wild shape form, but one or the other should?
Wildshape says that the druid assumes the stats of the beats (with a few exceptions). The stats of a monster do include the type. So, I think a druid in wildshape is, as a matter of fact, a beast.
Trirhbda's answer is just a suggestion As filecat said, officially the druid becomes a beast, with all the hangups and benefits that come from changing creature type
I agree with Trirhbda. PHB 67 .... “you retain your alignment, personality, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Constitution...” and “you retain the benefit of any features from your class, race, or other source....”
I’m still not sure of the Hold Person part of the question. The wording of Wild Shape says you “assume the shape of a beast”, it doesn’t say you become a beast. I’m not sure how important that distinction is.

Dominate Beast is a 4th level spell, Dominate Person is 5th level and Dominate Monster is 8th. Hold Person is a 2nd level spell and Hold Monster is 5th. I’m assuming there is no Hold Beast because it would be a 1st level spell by this logic but that would be overpowered.

I would say that Dominate Beasts would not work since the druid retains his mental stats.
Two answers with two different opinions? I’m leaning towards the idea of hold person working and dominate beast not working ....
due to the fact that it is a person (player) however I feel like dominate beast would work on a rangers beast.

I’m still not sure of the Hold Person part of the question. The wording of Wild Shape says you “assume the shape of a beast”, it doesn’t say you become a beast. I’m not sure how important that distinction is.
The spell says to choose a humanoid....and Mike Mearls on Sage Advice says Hold Person does not work on shapeshifter Druid at this link.... https://www.sageadvice.eu/2016/07/02/does-hold-person-work-on-a-shapeshifted-druid/
