So, DM and myself (moon druid, 6th level) have come to an agreement after some searching of internet forums, opinions etc, that I can use Conjure Animals as the source for the Wildshape requirement of "a beast that you have seen before". The reason we agreed upon this was the following sentence in the spell - "Each beast is also considered fey..." - the key word we focused on being "also", which to us means the summoned creatures are fey, in ADDITION to being beasts.
We have not really found any definitive ruling on if this is the RAI or RAW...both seem arguable. Bottom line, we want the class to be enjoyable to play as well. Now that sixth level has hit, certainly seeing other classes shine (in terms of game power) anyways.
To keep some level of challenge, the DM does restrict what I can summon based on the area we are in, past summoning history etc, so it's not just a free-for-all by any means, but does take some thought etc. For example, in a desert environment, I won't be summoning any new creatures (Giant Toad) for example, but could get a camel. In that same desert environment, I may repeatedly get camels as well depending on some random factors the DM keeps to himself for the most part.
Just looking for more opinions, gameplay ideas etc. How do you make the WildShape, Conjure Animals etc more enjoyable, playable. Any house rules, imaginative ideas etc?
I don't think there's room for debate. They're definitely beasts. It says right there on the spell, and on their stat blocks. It's weird that they also count as fey, but that doesn't make them not beasts.
The DM is 100% in control of the specific creatures that end up being summoned, so they can make encountering new beasts as easy or as hard as they want.

This helps the argument as well...
