I still look my little forest gnome. Gnome cunning and speak with small beasts is super helpful. I also feel like forest gnomes add some great flavoring in there.
Because of their extensive travels, gnome adventurers often become fascinated with the grandeur of the cosmos as seen in the motion of the stars across the sky. They view the cosmic array as a giant machine of wonderful complexity — a banquet for a curious gnomish mind. Many renowned astronomers, wizards, and extraplanar travelers are gnomes, having undertaken those disciplines in the hope of better understanding the workings of the multiverse.
Mountain Dwarf, probably. +2 in Con and Wis, as well as some floating weapon/tool proficiencies will help most druids.
tack on that you can alter your armor, weapon, and tool profs you can technically be a druid swinging a flametongue greatsword with prof XD
Can't be made out of metal, though. The DM will have to allow you to make a greatsword with wood or another material.
they can use metal weapons. it starts with a scimitar even. The issue arises is from it saying they wont (not CAN'T) use armor or shields made of metal. This was SAC'ed to say that this itself is just a cultural idea and that basically nothing stops them from saying "I reject that that philosophy" and wearing half-plate or even full if they use str.
I'm hoping to play a Groot & Rocket inspired wildfire druid. Awaken tree druid (implemented as a warforged) with his wildfire spirit manifesting as a small red panda (who can only say "I am scorch!").

Magic resistance. Darkvision. Poison immunity. Plus innate spellcasting that you could potentially (up to DM approval) cast while in wild shape, since it's innate spellcasting.
Ghostwise hobbit (yeah I know it's halfling but still) is great on a moon druid for telepathic communication with your party while wild shape
Also moon druid is great on an elf to get access to the Elven Accuracy feat so your dire wolf wild shape can get access to double advantage #packtactics

I like satyr for some of the same reasons. Fey with magic resistance. The other minor features are less interesting.
Well, for my better immersion I usually play human (All games). Getting Fey Touched (+1Wis/Mist Step/Dissonant Whisper) is pretty potent on lvl 1, and you can get (Resilient or War Caster) at level 4.
My point is: It's pretty likely that you wan't to get something that preserve you concentration at level 4, so getting dissonant whisper isn't that easy for most races, and since druid doesn't have an good single target spell this helps a lot. On top of that making the enemy run when you have like 5+ wolfs/spider/snakes around him... oh boy, that is lot of damage for a first level spell. Do not forget that you will have Mist Step from level 1. Initially you'll only be able to use once, but still, is healps a druid on an aspect that he is deficient.
With that been said, on October there will be the new Dragonborns, and if they release as it is on UA the gem one will be really great!! Wings and breath weapon that technically you can use while shape shifted!? Been able to telepathically communicate!? 3 points of stats that you can select whatever you want (Some people, me included doesn't use Tasha's optional features)!? All great stuff, and remember, the new breath weapon will be way better (More damage, Proficiency time uses, Just consume one attack and not one full action).
Now we have a lot of new contenders, e.g.:
cooltoasty synergy with Circle of the WildfireWhat's your favourite new Druid race, or race/subclass combo?
Hmmm... Probably a tabaxi who loves snuggling by the fire in a snowy place.

MToF contains the following note about gnomes:
Circle of Stars fits nicely!

Autognome works well. I'm using it with Circle of stars for compatible theme, especially in Spelljammer.
Food, Scifi/fantasy, anime, DND 5E/RPG geek.
Hows abouts a Gem Dragonborn, eh? Flight at 5th level, telepathic speech, and force or psychic damage breath weapon.
Custom Lineage with Fey Touched
You start with 18 WIS, and the feat gives you Misty Step and Silvery Barbs / Dissonant Whispers
At lvl 4 it's a lot easier to justify taking War Caster instead of +2 WIS
+2 WIS at lvl 8
Resilient CON at lvl 12 (start with 15 CON)
Tortle for the armor class.
In Humblewood, hedge (hedgehog) has similar advantages.
