Tried out the giant elk in combat last night, but really came out as a total failure...anyone have any insight on this?
Here's the issue...the elk gets no bonus action. So the problem is, you "CHARGE" (and if you get lucky, the target ends up prone), but then pretty well guaranteed the target stands up again on its turn, so you pretty well never get to use the "HOOVES" attack.
When your turn comes around again, if you want to charge someone else, you generate an opportunity attack, or just have to RAM your current opponent.
Are we missing some errata or something perhaps? Basically, in a very long combat, never got to use hooves once...even with a Paladin that loves to shield bash foes to the ground. There really seems to be something missing. No where near as dangerous as it seems.
imagine if there were 4 or 5 of those Elk together though!
Or even if another party member got in the teamwork spirit and grappled the target to make them standing up more complicated, giving you the chance to elk-smash the baddies.

Giant Elk hooves are dangerous when they are part of a herd, but not so much by themselves. Some ways around this:
Yup,

Now I want to have one of my parties fight a stampeding herd of giant elk. This is part of why I love D&D.

Late to the party here, but Ram has a reach of 10'. You can charge in, Ram them, then run away in the same turn ready to Ram them again next turn.
See about convincing party members to grapple targets while they're prone or just pushing them over before your turn for Trample.
Randomly chiming in. Mobile feat might solve the issue.
